Similarly we do not recommend using PVA as a sealer on walls that are to be over painted with emulsion paints. Polyvinyl acetate, (PVA) is a multi-purpose chemical compound that has a large application base and is the ingredient in many compounds that are used around the home DIY industry. Sealing the surface with PVA slows down this moisture absorption and allows the plaster to remain workable for longer. It won’t take long but it’s best to leave it overnight so leave at least 12hours but it’s best to leave about 24 hours to ensure that all the sealer has completely dried into the concrete. It is an environmentally safe product that adheres to the UK environment standards which makes it a great choice for sealing a dusty concrete floor.

In its extreme, big boy/girl form it becomes an extremely versatile, waterproof adhesive and sealer, which has an extraordinary number of uses in the building trade. If the PVA is dry, the surface will not be able to "suck up" any of the moisture in the mix and it will take longer to dry. If you’re plastering a large area, delegate the PVA part so you can focus on mixing the plaster at the right time. PVA can simply be painted onto any surface, but as it is water based and needs to be absorbed, it will not stick two non–absorbent surfaces together. Painting a coat of PVA on the surface before the cement mortar is applied can even further increase this adhesion. Some of our partners may process your data as a part of their legitimate business interest without asking for consent. For more info, check out the ‘ Taping and Jointing‘ section in our guide to plasterboarding brick walls. PVA is used to coat extremely absorbent surfaces before the application of a finish which will dry out too quickly to work on if it were applied direct. PVA sealer is an extremely versatile, odourless, waterproof and non-toxic adhesive that is suitable for a multitude of tasks and requirements.

It creates a barrier between the concrete which protects and allows you to easily apply a coat of enamel or epoxy-based paint as a finishing coat if you wish to. For external use we recommend using SBR Bond which is much stronger and also stable in Freeze-Thaw conditions. You may need to be creative in some cases, as the carpenter’s daughter did when plastering a wall with chased cables. If you have paint splatters dried in then you are going to want to remove those as well as these will cause issues with the PVA. We and our partners use data for Personalised ads and content, ad and content measurement, audience insights and product development. PVA also acts as a bonding agent, so applying a coat of PVA before plastering helps bond plaster to walls. Apply the PVA sealer with either a soft broom brush if you have a large surface to apply and finish the edges off with a small paintbrush.

An important point to make is If the surface you are working on is external and likely to be washed with rain regularly, PVA is not the best product to use. Paint it onto the wall the same way you’d paint while decorating, and use a paint roller instead of a brush if you need to cover a large area. One step up the ladder, and a little stronger, it becomes an excellent wood glue for DIY enthusiasts and joiners alike. PVA polyvinyl acetate is an inexpensive solution to sealing concrete floors and can work just as well as expensive specialised concrete sealers. Concrete sealers combat this problem by essentially sealing the concrete from moisture and locking in the crumbly surface of the concrete. You will not be able to remove all the dust although and the more you brush the more dust will naturally release from concrete so don’t worry this will be fine when you come to apply the PVA solution. For example, when plastering over an existing artex ceiling the moisture in the plaster would be soaked up so quickly that the plaster would be rock hard in minutes and getting a smooth finish would be impossible.

You can find PVA in the likes of latex acrylic paint and drywall primer in addition to concrete floor sealers.Plasterboard only — Cover the joints between boards with tape if plastering onto freshly erected plasterboard.
