The plot blurb I read didn’t mention it, but the doctors mentioned are actually “male midwives” as one says at one point, early OBGYNs who make emergency house visits for childbirth crises. One note – trigger warning for extreme detail in women’s health issues, from birthing, to birthing difficulties, to early abortion methods and some pretty grisly medical tactics for, uh, saving the mother rather than the pregnancy. I appreciated that it didn’t shy away from women’s medical issues, as understanding them can help improve general opinion and policy writing and law-making…

As if that wasn't sufficient.Raven soon discovers that Sarah and his wife Eugenie, intend to attend a display of "mesmerism" by a certain Dr Malham, whom Raven suspects is a fraud. He accepts that medical science is evolving rapidly but "mesmerism? No! Raven has enough on his hands as it is. Body parts have been found at Surgeons Hall, and they’re not anatomy specimens. In a city still haunted by the crimes of Burke and Hare, he is tasked with heading off a scandal.A rip-roaring tale of murder amid the medical experiments of 19th-century Edinburgh. The book brings both city and period to colourful life and is a joy to read’ Dr Simpson swept in through the front door. His expression of irritation and curiosity turned to one of confusion and dismay as he took in the scene that greeted him: his housemaid in another man's home after dark, his apprentice bruised and bleeding, and both of them standing over the trussed-up figure of his sister-in-law's betrothed. Angelique de Xavia, the diminutive but deadly police officer from A Big Boy Did it and Ran Away, The Sacred Art of Stealing and A Snowball in Hell. What follows is a fine tale of murder and deceit, with a list of suspects to drool over. We meet old friends and enemies, and new characters would could turn out to be one, the other, or both. There are several revelations which long-time fans will love. The love-triangle between Will, Sarah and Eugenie continues to feature large, as they all struggle with their feelings.

Novelist Christopher Brookmyre: My life in five games". BBC News. 14 July 2014 . Retrieved 14 July 2014. The Art of Dying” is the second novel in the “Ways of All Flesh” series, which was released in the year 2019. The year is 1850, in Edinburgh. Hordes of patients are dying all over the city, even though they are at the forefront of modern medicine, and the doctors find all their remedies powerless. It isn’t just the deaths that are dismaying the prominent Dr. James Simpson, as there is a whispering campaign that is attempting to put the blame for the death of a patient in suspicious circumstances. And remain hidden. I initially got the impression that Voices of the Dead was quite slow to reveal its purpose and direction, Raven and Sarah's involvement in the criminal investigation a little contrived for an apprentice doctor and a widow with medical ambitions. Both surely would have more on their plates than to do the work of the police for them. It did seem like Brookmyre getting on his high horse again about fraudster spiritualists and mediums without any apparent connection to the crime. As you can imagine, sleight of hand is involved in these targeted pseudo-sciences and you suspect that the author(s) are indulging in a similar game of bait-and-switch. And indeed it proves to be the case, the plotting perfectly balanced with revelations dropped with precision at the right places and times. Impressively so. Any issues with the book list you are seeing? Or is there an author or series we don’t have? Let me know! Will Raven and Sarah Fisher are both interesting characters. I must say it's very refreshing to have MCs who are both not members of high peerage. Usually in historical books, at least one of them is incredibly rich. It's great to see Sarah and Will strive to get where they want to be. Will is ambitious and I respect that and the flaws he showed throughout the story just made him so real. Sarah is driven. She also assists in Mr. Simpson's clinic giving her firsthand experiences of medicine and I liked that Mr. Simpsons doesn't mind Sarah being a woman and instead encourage her to learn. :)

Steff Kennedy, the hero of Not the End of the World, is mentioned as the photographer who took the picture of the Arguments for their single sleeve in A Big Boy Did It and Ran Away. He also features in Dead Girl Walking shooting a major photospread of the female members of the band "Savage Earth Heart" for "Tatler". Now, like I said the tone set in the first scene didn't carry on throughout, or at least not in first half. There's still a hint of mystery and suspense but just a hint. Instead in the first half, the book focused on medicine, Will's experiences in patient after patient, all are laboring mothers. Yes, the book is about medicine history and I see the importance of countless patients but it would've been better if there's equal stress in the crime aspect of the story. And hey, the labors look the same to me so I don't see the need to have so many of it and presented one after the other. But again, I'm ok if there's many of them but I need the other aspect of the story presented too, maybe in between the laboring mothers. When Nicci French met Ambrose Parry: couples who write together share secrets". the Guardian. 12 August 2018. Highly recommended to historical fiction readers who like a bit of mystery and interesting characters.

Will Raven, medical student, finds a prostitute friend dead in her place in a mangled, aggravated position telling of a gruesome death. As some say, she was just another “deid hoor”, however Raven keeps thinking there has to be more to this case. Set in 1840s Edinburgh, this book follows the story of a young man, Will Raven, who has a past he's trying to run away from. He's set to make a name in medicine and was given a chance to be an apprentice of the well-known, esteemed professor of midwifery, James Young Simpson. There, Will Raven meets Sarah Fisher, a young maid who aspires to be more than what she is, a nd especially more than what women in her time should be. For some reason, Sarah and Will immediately dislike each other, but when the number of deaths around them grew, they were forced to work together to solve the mystery behind the deaths, each has their own motives. Think about that title! THE WAY OF ALL FLESH. What is the way of all flesh? Is there a commonality in the behavior of all flesh? Is it a reaction of all flesh? Is it the growth or decomposition of all flesh? Or is it merely the greed of those with flesh? As I was reading this novel, it made me think more and more how powerful of a title this really is. CID Officers Catherine McLeod, Anthony "Beano" Thompson and Laura Geddes appear in the three "Jasmine Sharp" novels and also play minor roles in Dead Girl Walking. This provides the first strong link between the "Sharp" and "Parlabane" story arcs. (However, note that whereas Beano is a DC - Detective Constable - in the "Jasmine Sharp" novels, he is described in Dead Girl Walking as a DI - Detective Inspector - in three locations, and never as a DC. Catherine McLeod is a Detective Superintendent in both environments.) Catherine McLeod is also mentioned in a closing chapter of Fallen Angel, as investigating the death of a character.

Body parts have been found across the city - a foot in the Surgeon's Hall, another beneath a debtor's floorboards, more pieces in the soil of a freshly filled grave - and Will Raven, assistant to the great Dr Simpson, is being asked questions about the crime. This story revolves around some rather theatrical people, although we are initially led to believe that some of them have medical knowledge. A key topic is mesmerise and it's difference from the new skill of hypnosis. Whilst the latter is seen as being of potential use in the medical profession, the former is used by showmen. Brookmyre was born in Glasgow and raised and schooled in Barrhead, attending St. Mark's Primary School and St. Luke's High School, before attending the University of Glasgow.
