He described the whiskey as “a big, bold Tennessee Whiskey at 100 proof with layered notes of caramel, rich oak, and spice giving way to a pleasantly lingering finish.” In this personal blog, I share my knowledge and insights on Whisky, Whiskey & Bourbon and other spirits, drawing from my 30 years of extensive experience. Of special note: Be aware that both bottles are 700ml instead of the standard 750ml, which was recently approved as an option in the U.S.

My journey into the world of spirits began as a pub owner, where I cultivated memorable experiences for patrons and nurtured a deep appreciation for fine liquors. Both whiskeys are bottled in bond but the Triple Mash is a unique blend of three whiskeys crafted at the Lynchburg Distillery. Exploring the Agave Fields of Oaxaca: While my career commenced with a focus on Scotch and Bourbon, life’s adventures have led me to the picturesque agave fields of Oaxaca, Mexico. The whiskey delivers a lengthier finish that pleasantly lingers, ensuring a satisfying experience from start to end, with no disappointments along the way. Despite being bottled at the same proof, the Triple Mash stands out with its enhanced body and bolder taste, all without sacrificing smoothness or becoming harsh. My first step was to seek out the original press release where I first saw the announcement of these expressions. In the very beginning of the press release I found a lot of what I wanted to know: The flavor profile showcases the delightful combination of banana nut bread, fruity notes of apple and apricot, and a gentle touch of rye spice that remains relatively restrained. On the nose: Rain-soaked oak that is begging for a breather. The rain has been non-stop. The bark has been darkened and as you pass by the tree it begs for fresh air. If you are a fan of Petrichor you will spend quite a bit of time with this one.

What I will do is say that unlike most of what we’ve seen from JD in recent years, these are indeed permanent expressions, both bonded, so over 4 years old and bottled at 100 proof. Looking forward to see what is next for Bonded series, maybe a bonded rye/Tennessee malt with an age statement (although 4 YO as per bond rules is not bad at all).

One important aspect about this whiskey and its Triple Mash counterpart, is the change to 700mL bottle size as opposed to the typical 750mL we are accustomed to in the United States. In late 2020, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) amended regulations that govern wine and spirits bottle sizes, adding four new allowable standards of fill for distilled spirits: 700mL, 720mL, 900mL, and 1.8L. According to the TTB, “These new container sizes will provide bottlers with flexibility by allowing the use of the added container sizes, and will facilitate the movement of goods in domestic and international commerce, while also providing consumers broader purchasing options.” Notably, 700mL is a more common bottle size globally, so the 750mL we're accustomed to here in the United States is the oddity, not the other way around. Additional notes of baking spice and a subtle hint of bitter chocolate emerge, contributing to a satisfying conclusion. Is it good?

Here, I’ve immersed myself in the art of crafting Mezcal, gaining a newfound appreciation for the craftsmanship that goes into distilling this ancient spirit. So, for this review I decided to be a blissfully unaware whiskey consumer. I see a big brand that I like. They release a new product that seems fun. I have no idea if this will be the first of many regular releases or a limited release. I just wanted to buy this, open it, share it, review it and be on my way. Let’s just drink it. However, I eventually learned that you should always read before you write. This experience was a precursor to my venture into the liquor shop business, where I had the privilege of curating an extensive collection of liquors, granting me access to thousands of unique bottles from across the globe. The nose of the Triple Mash offers notes of banana, along with vanilla, caramel, a touch of rye spice, and clove. We live in an age of collectors and flippers. I also see a growing number of people living in the overlap of the two in the Venn diagram. They collect to flip and flip to collect. You see, I have also fallen victim to the pitfalls of collecting. I buy a lot of the same things I have always liked.
