There was so much about the book that was really close to my heart - the gorgeous queerness and fantastic disability representation at the top of the list - and something else I was particularly happy to see was the sheer Britishness - and specifically northernness. It feels like a real triumph for UKYA to read all those Yorkshire colloquialisms and descriptions of narrow ginnels and trip-hazardous cobblestones in a book that feels so accessible and well-placed within the mainstream. Learning so much about York and all the rich history that goes along with it will be fascinating for the uninitiated, and give northern readers a rare chance to see something approaching their lives spotlighted.

I've been struggling through this book for months hoping it would get me out of my reading slump but the only thing that might take me out of it is finally finishing this.The humans – Leone and Mitch, primarily – were once Charlie's friends, until they misunderstood his experience in a ghostly deathloop (reliving that person's death, with real physical consequences) as a suicide attempt. At first, you wonder about their motives and how they fit into the story, and you share Charlie's mistrust of them. But, just as Charlie does, their real motives and personalities are revealed in a way that allow us to see the situation through Charlie's eyes, with a new understanding. Talbot took one of the oldest book tropes of all time – haunting by ghosts – and gave it a unique, modern twist that was both fun and relatable. With a main character who is young enough to make mistakes and learn from it, and who doesn't have all the answers, they wove a tale that was near perfection. I'm so so happy Chris introduced me to Rosie and to her marvellous book! I absolutely can't wait to read the sequel and return to these wonderful characters I love so much. Hurry up, Rosie, hurry up!
