Tony Pike was the very epitome of the phrase emblazoned on the building in our car park: You can check in, but you can never check out. Under Tony’s management it soon became a glamorous celebrity bolthole for the likes of Freddie Mercury, Grace Jones, Julio Iglesias and perhaps most famously, George Michael. Although ive heard that this book is a bit of "Don't let the truth get in the way of a good story" its still a great read and if youve ever been to Pikes or know the history of the place its well worth a read . Gentlemen of a certain age are known to have a fondness for the trends that were in style during their younger years, and so Dawn filled the space with stylish antiques, but pieces that also resonate with the trends of today. Despite being written in a somewhat clunky, basic way, and being peppered with crude references told in Tony’s own words, this book is endlessly intriguing.

Neurodiverse Relationships: Autistic and Neurotypical Neurodiverse Relationships: Autistic and Neurotypical

Giant glossy cherries complement the pineapple lamps on the nightstand, while Tony’s love of the ladies is acknowledged through two lightboxes showcasing photography by artist Diana Gomez – including one of the indelible Courtney Love which begs the question, did she and Tony have a connection? If you were to pick up the book with no prior knowledge of Tony or Pikes, it’s quite possible you’d think it was a work of fiction. It was pitch black, it felt like the taxi had been driving for about 40 minutes (the big highway wasn’t there back then and there was no such thing as GPS so perhaps he’d gotten lost – my Aussie twang pronouncing ‘Pikes’ is a far cry from the Spanish ‘Pee-kays’), there were no signs anywhere and the campo seemed like a horror movie waiting to happen.Matt spends most of his year all around India; if you see him, remember get him to sign a copy for you. We thought he was charming (perhaps a little too forward given our age differences – though I would go on to learn that was simply his way with all women) and that was the start to a life-changing holiday, because true to my very first thought on checking in, I went back to Australia, collected my cat and moved to Ibiza. After Tony passed away, Pikes creative director Dawn Hindle knew she wanted to remodel the space, but with the intention to completely respect to its former resident. Known as Mr Ibiza, he was the embodiment of Balearic hedonism, a brash, hard-drinking, drug-taking philanderer whose way with women would have made even the love poet blush.

Mr Pikes: The Story Behind The Ibiza Legend by Tony Pike

Anyone with an interest in the White Isle and its colourful characters will find this story fascinating. Much-married, hedonistic hotel owner who partied hard with many a pop star and was known as the Hugh Hefner of Ibiza; John Donne may have written that no man is an island, but Tony Pike came close. Mr Pikes’ built the famous rock n roll hotel which was put on the celebrity map by George Michael and Freddie Mercury and simply known as Pikes. Tony was one of the old guard in Ibiza; he’d been there, done that and written the book – literally; his autobiography Mr Pikes: The story behind the Ibiza legend was released in 2018. We only wish we could have seen the look on the nurses’ faces when they helped unpack their new tenant’s possessions! After 85 incredible years, five wives, four children, a modelling career, a shipwreck off the Bermuda Triangle, countless love affairs, kindred friendships with some of the most iconic celebrities of our time, infinite crazy adventures and more parties than most of us will experience in a lifetime, Tony Pike has left the building. Escaping to Australia and using his abundant charms to build connections, businesses and attract an endless stream of women, Tony’s hedonistic shenanigans eventually led him to Ibiza where he bought a 500 year old wreck of a finca which became the infamous Pikes hotel. Gold-framed vintage mirrors mean you can get a good look at what’s happening in other parts of the room from wherever you’re sitting, and an array of quirky décor and art pieces line the walls – ranging from antique clocks and decorative fish plates to a tapestry of a horse (a nod to Tony’s past experience as a jockey) and an incredible bronzed peacock artwork inspired by Tony’s years spent in Asia. And when we got up for breakfast (far too late; at the time they only served breakfast till 8am, but smiley-faced barman Emil – who has now worked at Pikes for over 35 years – plonked us on a bar stool, made us one of the best Bloody Marys I’d ever had and went about finding someone to whip up a basic brekkie for us anyway because he was nice like that.
