David: The Altra Escalante is a minimalist road running shoe that has a very natural feel to it. The shoe uses a 0mm drop platform, meaning there is no difference in height between the heel and the forefoot. The shoe has moderately flexible design to it and a comfortable knit upper. For some this will be a walking shoe/running shoe double and for some it could even be a speed work shoe. The Escalante 2.5 has plenty of underfoot protection, especially for a minimalist shoe. That being said, our tester did experience some discomfort when pushing distances over 10K and would recommend these shoes for faster, shorter runs. The traction in the Escalante 2.5 is ideal for daily road runs and has the durability to last for kilometres and kilometres. However, looking at the enormous square toebox, we can tell that there is significantly more room for toe splay in this Altra shoe compared to the average running shoe. Again, it’s not that I feel these issues when running, but it’s likely having an effect when moving through my gait. If I use these shoes continuously, in the long term, my biomechanics may become used to the “support,” and my foot’s muscles could weaken. It’s a theory, but I wouldn’t chance it. At the forefoot, the midsole of Altra Escalante 3 sits at the average (111.5mm vs 111.8mm). At the heel, it is narrower than the average, almost 6mm! (Escalante: 82.8mm, average: 88.7mm) DPT/Footwear Science: A (A great job of implementing natural feeling shoe and minimalist footwear for running and beyond) In Summary if you like light shoes with a versatile but, responsive ride and a low drop then the Escalante 2.5 is worth considering.

Otherwise, most runners should find the Altra Escalante 2.5 to be a wise choice in footwear. The Verdict Basically, what sets Escalante 3 apart from other shoes is a heel that is 9.1mm narrower in the upper than the average shoe out there! This might have attributed a lot to the overall stability feel. I’d say both. The cushion seems to recess in towards the arch and climbs up into the arch area, and then the insole exacerbates this by adding extra material in that raised area. Again, it’s minor in running shoe terms, but it’s there! Skratch Recovery, Coffee Flavor:Mental and physical boost post run. Coffee flavor is excellent and goes great straight into a fresh brewed cup Fit: A- (Dimensions are good with heel, midfoot, and forefoot. Upper material is comfortable, though the material does have some stretch to it.)Read this Escalante 2.5 review to find out if these comfortable shoes are the right choice for you. Features Comfort, meet adventure. Protective and weather-resistant, lightweight and fast or versatile, find the right hiking shoe for you. Stability is usually attributed to the wide base and upper that's narrower than the base. This is what lab data can tell us in this case: It seems like Topo have created a shoe that crosses lines between a “high cushioned barefoot” shoe and a “low cushioned conventional” shoe, meaning it fits many markets. And it could serve as a gym shoe if cushion is your thing (I’d love to convince you to be barefoot in the gym, though).
