Description

I read a book on John Wooden a month or two ago and Coach K is another coach who has built his life and program on good, unshaken values.

even if you don't like Coach K or the Duke Blue Devils, after reading this book I think you can at least respect the man and have some admiration for his coaching style. I personally believe everyone possesses leadership skills and whether they use them or not determines if they become a leader. Demonstrate the principle "we're all important" by making sure that you are not the only one speaking at a meeting. If I hope to get the most out of these players as a group, I have to coach them differently than previous teams. The lessons that I'm taking for me from this book have to do with the fist: Communication, Trust, Collective Responsibility, Caring, and Pride in making things happen - and that any finger open in the fist make it more prone to be broken (that's the intensity of semi-pro/professional sports). Time management is a lesson that the students learn through us-not only as it relates to them individually, but as it pertains to a group. His breezy approach is direct and simple: what's most important is working as a team toward a common goal--not necessarily to win the game, but to play the best possible game. Mutual commitment helps overcome the fear of failure-especially when people are part of a team sharing and achieving goals.

When Johnny and Mark explained their situation to me, they looked me straight in the eye-and I could tell they were being truthful and sincere. We then hand out laminated cards that include the home and business phone numbers of every member of the team-including players, assistant coaches, and so on. As great a coach and human being as Coach K may be, his book doesn't come close to Wooden's but neither does any other that I have read. I think that the purpose he had in writing this book was to inform the reader on how to develop good coaching skills as well as applying them to your everyday life, and allowing you to become a better individual along with becoming an even better teammate. It just seems like a team should still be able to perform better than that if the head coach misses games.
