For those who come to this epitome of English castles seeking encounters of a more spine-tingling nature, the "Ghost Tower" is the place to visit. Sir Fulke Modern reports of the castle’s ghosts still include the sound of phantom footsteps, however they are no longer attributed to Guy but soldiers of the past. Many books also claim Mr Marsh himself experienced the phantom footsteps and not the former bailiff – which is untrue. Disabled guests (and/or a registered Carer) with physical impairment(s) restricting mobility can experience the final four rooms free of charge, which are standard wheelchair accessible. Please speak to the team at The Castle Dungeon entrance for more information And the mournful wails of a distraught woman believed to have been walled up with her infant is still heard two centuries after the unspeakable act. He lived life like a dream in the heaven he had created. However, once he took note that his days were beginning to dwindle he crafted a will with a bequest of an amount of money dedicated to his servant.

As Patricia and I entered the bedchamber which was to be the last resting-place of Sir Fulke Greville’s earthly body, I could sense that much spirit activity had been experienced here. I was drawn towards the bed…and gradually the spirit form of a man began to develop. I could see that he was attired in Elizabethan dress. 1 Seven years later, thoughts of his mortality led Greville to draw a will. He had never married and had no children, so he made a little provision for his It is said castle dungeon is haunted by a malicious spirit of a jailer. He enjoyed brutalizing the prisoners that he used to watch over. He used to scratch and violently hurt the prisoners. The evil ghoul has been seen hiding behind a metal grate and yells at the approaching visitors. Sir Fulke Greville, who lived here from 1604, was stabbed by his much-trusted servant, Ralph Heywood. The murder resulted from Heywood learning he would be receiving very little in Greville’s will. One of the most infamous events that has been scratched into the paranormal record disc of the castle was the shanking of Sir Fulke Greville. Fulke was gifted the castle by King James I in 1604 and restored the shattered ruin of a castle into a glamorous palace filled with rich food, extravagant furniture and lavish wines. Here you can find all the royal guests as waxworks including the Prince of Wales (King Edward VII) and Winston Churchill. Our favourites though were the three scare mazes on offer during the day - Haunted Hollows, Foolish Ghouls and Upscares Downscares. Without giving too much away for those visiting over the next week, these were so much fun and much more family-friendly for younger children (and adults, like me, who don't like to be spooked). You'll laugh and be made to jump, but nothing too extreme.

Upscares Downscares was very entertaining and got all the younger children involved - the characters really make it and are incredibly funny. Grevile died on the thirtieth of September 1628, he had recently written a will and it had been released. A servant of Grevile's named Ralph Heywood had been left out of the will. Heywood felt that he was entitled to be included in the will and confronted Grevile about this. Grevile explained that he simply did not have enough money and this angered Heywood. Heywood stabbed Greville, but then felt great guilt about what he had done and turned the knife on himself. Heywood died instantly but Grevile took much longer to die, He died alone trapped in the south tower where he was stabbed. Blades were thrust through flesh and blood spurted around like rain, cadavers crushed between hooves and boots; a sea of rotting flesh and spewing innards, dead men with dead dreams. For two weeks, visitors are entertained by a variety of spooky shows, creepy games and spine tingling ghost stories. The transcript seems to explain that this ghost had stolen something from the household in the past, and was assisted in his noise making by two other spirits. A conversation

Book a short break

Since his brutal slaying, the apparition of Fulke Greville has been sighted wandering the halls of his former home. Many people have encountered the malevolent spirit with an aggressive nature who lurks in the dungeon and on one investigation in the Kingmaker (a labyrinth of rooms with waxworks at every turn), we experienced true poltergeist activity when a coin was thrown towards the group from beyond the gates. During one vigil in Caesar's tower the activity became so intense we had to leave the area.

Bloxham was caught stealing from the Earl and was put under brutal torture and shame in front of the public. Shortly after this, the dog appeared and started to cause havoc around the castle grounds. My stepson and I particularly enjoyed two ghouls on stilts armed with bloody knives and machetes. They did however break character to dance to the music from the stage which was rather entertaining. Then in the 17th century, it became a royal home to the Greville family gifted by King James I. During the restorations it was actually part of the Gunpower plot of 1605 with Guy Fawkes.

Constructed in the 12th century, Coombe Abbey was originally the abbey for a group of Cistercian monks. It passed into the Harington family after the dissolution of monasteries, who sold it to numerous owners until the Craven family took possession in 1622 and held onto it until 1921.Now his tortured shade stumbles about the fortress, often viewed as a shadowy from emerging from his own portrait. Spectators of the intriguing objects often find they are under an unpleasant sensation of being strangled by an invisible source. The Haunted Castle is available to explore every day, 10am to 5pm, and guests can attend haunted shows, visit the haunted hollows, witch's tower or find their way through the Horrible Histories maze. And these ghosts that are believed to haunt this castle are just as bizarre and malicious as you might expect. Sir Fulke Greville Ralph Haywood, confronted Greville over his belief that his employer was attempting to cheat him in his will.
