Description

In Sherlockian tradition, the narration is through the POV of Watson and all the familiar recurring characters put in an appearance. People have argued for years about the effectiveness of Holmes’ observations, giving alternative explanations. Meanwhile, Watson meets with a mystery criminal, later revealed as Professor Moriarty, who provides him with a key to free Holmes from prison, before the detective can be assassinated. As far as I remember, every case written by Doyle was resolved by Holmes sitting down, smoking a pipe or three at home before the classic reveal. There may be evidence of the previous owners (inscriptions in the cover, the odd marking etc), it’s their history that makes them more precious, its all part of their narrative.

Three stalwart members of society, including one lord, one doctor, and an evil albino police officer, converge on the shooting resulting in Holmes being arrested then remanded for a hearing. It’s also well-written, and moves along well, but falls into the trap of so many authorized continuations, where the author is trying so hard to be true to or respectful of the characters/settings that the story itself ends up suffering. August 2022 - I'm the first to reach for the off button when there's too much "jazz" involved but this was a good blend that wasn't overwhelmed by either genre. Although Horowitz refers to a ‘three pipe problem’, Holmes does not smoke while sifting through the facts of either case. She tells Holmes she heard a noise during the night and went downstairs, where she saw the burglar exiting through a window and raised the alarm. There is no doubt, both in terms of the references both overt and implicit, and the general tone Horowitz strikes, that the author has immersed himself in the stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle whilst writing this latest adventure.

Horowitz is clearly familiar with the original series and yet he has chosen to reinterpret characters and give ‘new twists’ where in my opinion he should have stayed true to the original material. As Dr Watson was in residence at Baker Street and Holmes had no keys to the ‘other lodgings’ he later claimed to have around London, how these props came to be available at such short notice is inexplicable. We found everyone to be very helpful and easy to work with and look forward to working with your team again. I think AH has managed to do an excellent job of telling this story in a fashion that manages to conjure up the style of Arthur Conan Doyle. which actually comes from Shakespeare’s Henry V and just made me roll my eyes for its obviousness here.
