Well, it's not the goal of religion- from what I see the purpose of religion is to organize people who believe in the same things so they could feel cozy and secure surrounded by people who are just afraid to question things as they are. That same year, she was appointed UN Special Ambassador for the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation(FGM). Her story is a truly inspirational and extraordinary self-portrait of a remarkable woman whose spirit is as breathtaking as her beauty. Reading about FGM from Waris' experience( as a personal account of someone who had been subjected to it) was emotionally difficult yet I think to understand even a glimpse of what these women go to it is necessary to hear the story as they tell it.

She trekked solo to Mogadishu – and from there managed through relatives, to get a posting as a maid at the Somalia London embassy. This is extremely humbling, especially as she still appreciates the things that western society hates- rain, and a comparitively endless supply of food. The World Demographic Association nominated her as the first woman for the “Prix de la Gènèration” and the Martin Buber Foundation nominated her as the first woman for the “Martin Buber Gold Medal”. Milijonai mergaičių ir moterų kenčia nuo šio žiauraus papročio, tad bet kokios pastangos, galinčios paskatinti tokių veiksmų stabdymą, mano nuomone, turi būti labai vertinamos. I was under the impression that this memoir strongly focused on the author's experiences with FGM and her work with the Desert Flower Foundation to advocate for women's rights in Africa.Dirie's beauty led her to a career as a fashion model; her experience as a young girl subjected to circumcision led her to speak out against the practice and eventually become a human rights ambassador to the United Nations. her dedication towards helping to stop FGM across the world is so apparent, and she serves as a great example of a model (or even just someone in the public eye) using her platform to create positive change and a better future for women and girls.

Through projects like “Save a little desert flower”, which seeks to protect little girls in Africa from FGM.Their lives are determined by the wishes of men who wish to control every aspect of their existence, including even their sexuality. Tuve todo el tiempo la sensación de estar charlando con una amiga que me estaba contando la historia de su vida.

It's a very heart warming rags to riches story, whereby Waris grows up on a desert in Somalia milking and herding goats, living a very primitive life. Without going into too much detail, she managed to convey the horror and trauma of being subjected to female genital circumcision, a practise that causes more problems, than it prevents, and convinces you, that as a woman, we have a duty, irregardless of where we come from in the world, we should all raise our voices and try have this horrific practise stopped, before more young girls are subjected to it, and potentially die.It seems to me that when people say that they don't want to interfere with somebody's religious liberties, they mean that they don't care enough to do something about the victims of specific 'religious liberties'. Penniless and speaking little English, she became a janitor in Mc Donalds where she was famously discovered by a fashion photographer. She had such an exhausting, uphill struggle of hard graft throughout her teenage years, and even underwent the harrowing and barbaric procedure of female genital mutilation at the age of five; yet she still reflects on her childhood with such positive nostalgia that her down to earth character that perpetuates the novel is really endearing.

From the deserts of Somalia to the world of high fashion, she battles against oppression and emerges a real champion. You think of the millions of girls and women trapped in the situation Dirie survived (death from FMG is not uncommon - Dirie may have lost a sister from it, but no one speaks of it). Waris describes at one point how she felt frustrated because she felt that they were trying to turn her into a twisted black version of Cindy Crawford. She then underwent surgery to unstitch her vagina (in an unforgettable detail, she explains how amazing it felt to urinate in less than ten minutes and menstruate in less than ten days).Desert Flower: The Extraordinary Journey of a Desert Nomad is an autobiographical book written by Waris Dirie and Cathleen Miller, published in 1998 about the life of Somali model, Waris Dirie.
