Ah, the tried and true Samson C01. Believe it or not, I’ve had this mic since 2007! Wow. Time really does fly. I can’t say enough good things about this baby. It’s rugged as a freakin’ barbell and can withstand a lot of abuse. Rapping involves syncopation, rhythm, and placing emphasis on certain vocal sounds. To record in this style, you need a microphone that authentically reproduces the tone and pronunciations of your vocals.

It is a large-diaphragm condenser mic that is versatile. This mic was introduced in 2002, and it has been popular ever since. Its primary characteristics are evident in the highly competitive microphone industry and all the available options. Based on a large-diaphragm Chinese-built capsule, the mic is very nicely styled and cleanly engineered, with a choice of supercardioid, omni or figure-of-eight polar patterns. Supercardioid is a bit of an odd choice for studio work, but looking at the supplied polar plots indicates that it isn't too tight — very narrow cardioid patterns can be problematic if you're working with a singer who moves around a lot. Coming to the quality of construction, I found the C214 to be pretty sturdy. You'll find highly robust materials all around. The integrated capsule suspension is one example of this. The C01 does add a little color to recordings, but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It has a fairly smooth, flat frequency response, so there’s plenty of room for processing your vocals retrospectively in your chosen DAW.But overall this condenser microphone sounds great and is an excellent option for those on a budget. Where is it most effective? I personally haven’t had anything to complain about if you can believe it. There’s not really much else to say about this thing. It’s just a solid piece of equipment. Video Review (from me!) You might not be able to afford to great buy half a dozen microphones for different applications if you have a tight budget. Most people cannot afford them. This is where a mic such as this comes in. In fact, once I jokingly told my friends that if I only had an SM7B at my disposal, I could record an entire album with it (vocals, instruments, everything). It’s extremely difficult to come up with a Final Word here. So I’ll pose the question: What are you trying to record?

The Samson C01 has all the performance features that you demand from a large diaphragm studio condenser microphone. It's the perfect solution for recording vocals, acoustic instruments and for use as an overhead drum mic.Capturing audio at 16-bit 44.1/48 kHz resolution with a smooth, flat 20Hz-18kHz frequency response, the C01U Pro ensures authentic projection of both high and low frequencies into your favorite DAW or recording application. In addition, Samson maintains its longstanding commitment to ease of use with plug-and-play operation (no driver installation required), USB power via Mac, PC or iPad (cable included), and an included tripod stand and swivel mount for optimal desktop placement. The CO1U Pro even works with iPads and iPhones (4S and later) using Apple's Lightning USB Camera Adapter for those who want professional-quality sound on the go. It is a well-built microphone that can withstand live performance. It can also be used for studio work. The Performance A good microphone for live vocals is the essential thing in a studio. While all sounds are essential, it’s easier to argue with that statement if vocals are your only option. Although the majority of microphones that are well suited to recording rapping are of the condenser variety, the SM7B is dynamic. Its unique cardioid polar pattern allows it to perform like a condenser, with the ruggedness of a dynamic vocal mic. I feel the low-cut filter is best not used for vocal recording, as it noticeably affects the bottom end of the vocal range. It could be useful when using the mic as a drum overhead, though, as it often helps to roll off the bass when mixing the sound in with the predominantly middly and bassy close mics.

Well, that’s about it for today my friend! I hope you’ve enjoyed this article on the Samson C01 vs. Behringer C1. A younger sibling of the legendary AKG C414, the C214 builds upon its predecessor’s qualities and presents them in a more affordable format. The components used are very similar to the revered C414, with some slight adjustments which make it ideal for rappers.A few people also compared it favorably to mics way out of its price range. A few examples: Shure SM7, AKG C414, and the Neumann TLM 193. The two sensor membranes are fragile. They are designed to collect more decent sound than a dynamic coil. It also has a gold-plated Xlr connector. The frequency response of the TLM 102 is ideal for recording rap vocals. I found that it focuses on the expression of the performer’s vocal style quite successfully. For such a high-quality mic, it is also surprisingly compact. A microphone's frequency response displays the range of sounds that it is capable of capturing, in terms of pitch. For recording rap vocals, it's highly important that the mic you choose covers the complete frequency range of the human voice.

Samson C01 - Sound On Sound

If your style of rapping is aggressive and punchy, this large-diaphragm condenser will have no problems handling it. Even when you go extremely crazy with your vocals, this mic doesn't disappoint. Plosives weren't an issue in my experience, and I was blown away by the low-end captured by this mic. It's quite common that condenser microphones are fitted with switchable polar patterns. This allows you to change between cardioid, Omni, and figure-of-eight to suit the type of recording you are aiming for. Frequency Response Regardless of the pitch and timbre of your rap vocals, the SM7B will suffice. When the low cut is activated, it highlights the mid-range and treble frequencies of rap vocals. When the presence booster is engaged, it works seamlessly with high-end sound sources. A great mic should be well-built to suit a wide range of uses. The mic can be used in any environment, so it must be capable of handling that. Apart from capturing vocals, as a low-budget mic, you can use it for streaming (Twitch, anyone?), podcasting or just as an all-purpose crystal clear mic for meetings and video calls. The frequency response of the mic shows a gentle drop-off below 80Hz, plus a gentle presence/air boost centred around 10kHz. The response is quoted at 40Hz to 18kHz (the graph indicates that levels are down by around 6dB at these points), which is more like the Rode NT1 than the models mentioned earlier. Sensitivity is quoted at 33dB/Pa and, in practice, this was comparable with the other capacitor mics I tested it against and, indeed, a little higher than some. The maximum SPL handling is 136dB, which simply means loud sounds won't upset it. In Use
