Description

The Green Man is a three-part BBC TV adaptation of Kingsley Amis's 1969 novel of the same name, first broadcast on BBC1 from 28 October to 11 November 1990 and starring Albert Finney as the main character Maurice. Then, one day, Maurice sees a strange woman at the top of the stairs which go to the private part of the Inn where he lives with his father, daughter and his second wife. She is dressed in the manner of women from a previous century. He looks away for a second, and she is gone. The owner of a haunted country inn contends with death, fatherhood, romantic woes, and alcoholism in this humorous and “rattling good ghost story” from a Booker Prize–winning author ( The New York Times )

Maurice may be a misogynistic, homophobic, unfaithful cad, but Amis nevertheless positions him (pun intended) just on the right side of immorality that the reader is meant to empathise with him. Clearly, Amis identifies quite a bit with Maurice himself. Amis's first, 15-year marriage was to Hilary Bardwell, [40] the daughter of a civil servant, [41] by whom he had two sons and one daughter: Philip Amis, a graphics designer; [41] Martin Amis, a novelist who died in 2023; [42] and Sally Amis, who died in 2000. The 50 greatest British writers since 1945". The Times. ISSN 0140-0460 . Retrieved 26 September 2020. How rarely do we come across the really frightening ghost story now. Kingsley Amis’s The Green Man was a rare and honourable exception, and Amis followed the classic pattern of earlier writers, letting the story progress carefully from a recognisable normality, through unease, to the rapid unfolding of horror that marks out the most successful and scarifying of all horror story writers.” The Amis Inheritance—Profile on Martin and Kingsley Amis by Charles McGrath from New York Times Magazine (22 April 2007).Maurice Allington has reached middle age and is haunted by death. As he says, “I honestly can’t see why everybody who isn’t a child, everybody who’s theoretically old enough to have understood what death means, doesn’t spend all his time thinking about it. It’s a pretty arresting thought.” He also happens to own and run a country inn that is haunted. The Green Man opens as Maurice’s father drops dead (had he seen something in the room?) and continues as friends and family convene for the funeral. While other characters cannot believe in the ghost, the intensity of Maurice’s belief invites the reader to suspend that disbelief. Amis eases his readers into an acceptance of the supernatural by means of a variety of elements: the common sense and worldly character of the narrator, the characterization of the guests, the skillful use of incidental details to create the air of reality. People eat, drink, argue, reconcile, read, share, and make love with little or no expectation that anything out of the ordinary will (or can) happen. As the story progresses, we have stop-time sequences, a pact with the devil, shape changers, ghosts and a monster that may be after his daughter. I felt rather strung up, and was on a bottle of scotch a day, but this had been standard for twenty years.”
