Description

Mothballed in 1900, but reopened for distillation in 1965, Benriach is a distillery on the up after a difficult start. It was originally opened at the end of the 19th century by John Duff, owner of Longmorn, and continued to provide malt to their sister distillery until the 1960s. Nose: Orange marmalade right away, this bouquet is very deep. The jamminess drys into tobacco and a hint of vanilla. Following a series of ownership changes (including Chivas and Pernod), and a small number of unremarkable single malt releases, Benriach was bought by an independent consortium in 2004 and has since gone on to produce one of the industry’s most diverse range of whiskies. Scotland, home of many bogs, has a great natural resource in peat. The initial use for peat in whisky was a practical one. After malting, barley needs to be dried before the next step.

It’s a basic malt, and I definitely want more out of it, but for being an entry-level malt at 43% it’s nice. Nothing off or unpleasant about it, just light and soft – which isn’t a bad thing at all. We need these on the shelves and in our lineups. On the nose: sweet honey initially with a big hit of green apples and pears. I get subtle earthiness coming through with juicy raisins that turn into stewed apples, almost like an apple strudel with the buttery pastry. Over time, a lovely malty creaminess begins to invade, it reminds me of the frothy top of a warming porridge. I could not escape from the smell of soy wax and dried bean-curd with vanilla pods almost like a creamy rice pudding. Rhubarb and cream sweeties show its presence with hints of freeze-dried strawberries almost like a box of Kellogg’s Special K. Hazelnuts and the beginnings of cloves also begin to appear with a wafting of cedarwood. BenRiach only peats malt for a short period each year, in what they call “Smoke Season.” They source all of their peat from the Highland and Speyside regions. Their peated expressions consist of both peated and unpeated malt.Malty, fruity, vanilla, toffee, earthy hay and herbal notes with touches of banana bread and dried apricots. BenRiach “The Smoky Ten” (image via Brown-Forman) Tasting Notes: BenRiach “The Smoky Ten” 10 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky Highland peat is lighter than its Islay counterpart. The region has more forests and consequently has peat made of tree roots and hardier plant life. Many peated whisky distillers, both within and without Scotland, source their peat from both regions for more available flavor profiles. BenRiach is located in the Spey Valley and produces peated, unpeated and triple distilled single malts. They also use a variety of casks for maturation, including sherry, bourbon and virgin oak.

No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service. This is a decent whisky. It’s not crazy deep or explosive, but it is warm, tasty and easy to mix with.

AWARDS

B and B-: Good and above average. The best of the mass market whiskeys fit in this category, as do the bulk of the premium brands. A B- is three stars. Not all peat is the same. The organic matter that decays influences the type of peat, and thus the flavor of it. The isles, with Islay being the biggest and most prominent peat producer, tend to have more heather and low-lying plant life. This results in the biggest and boldest peat flavors. Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival 20th Anniversary Edition Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival 2019 The following indicators should be taken as only a guide and not a set of hard and fast rules. Some "premium" whiskeys really are quite terrible, while some mass market products are good enough to pour into a decanter and serve to the Duke of Edinburgh. A+: A masterpiece and one of the ten best whiskeys of its type. Above five stars. This is where peat comes in. The peat is burned to create smoke underneath the malting floors to stop the germination. The influence of the smoke on the barley leaves that signature smokiness. Peat smoke was one of the only methods available to initial Scotch whisky makers.
