After the train ride, you can discover the Mail Rail museum exhibition. There are many hands-on activities, making it great for kids too. Dress up as a train driver in the replica postmasters’ wardrobe or climb onboard an original train. Narrow gauge enthusiasts may well find the standard-gauge section of this book interesting, but the Post Office Railway chapters will fascinate. Narrow Gauge World Magazine - No 170, October 2022 that was the last working mail train that ever the rails. It was a glorious affair full of tears and all like that. But I think if the trains were running today, I would still be on there and I'm sure some of the others, because we were very, very dedicated. We loved that job. Retrieved 12 December 2013.In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Pacific Railway Act, to provide for the “safe and speedy transportation of the mails, troops, munitions of war, and public stores.” The act created the Union Pacific Railroad Company and authorized it to build a railroad westward from Nebraska, to connect with a road to be built eastward by the Central Pacific Railroad Company of California. Construction began the following year, eastward from Sacramento, California, and westward from Omaha, Nebraska. This empowered the Postmaster General to require rail companies to transport mail, either on their standard trains or on special mail-only trains. The law also required companies to provide carriages fitted for sorting it if needed, paving the way for the first TPO carriage in 1838. The second of Royal Mail’s automated sorting hubs - in Northampton - is due to be launched by summer 2023. A new centralised computer-controlled system was introduced in 1993, enabling the entire railway to be controlled from a single point instead of through separate control rooms at each station. By the late 1990s trains were only stopping at Paddington, Western Delivery Office, Mount Pleasant, and the East District Office. More than six million bags of mail were carried below ground each year – that is four million letters every day. With the completion of the transcontinental link, it was possible — for the first time — to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific Coasts on a nearly continuous rail line. Not only did the new railroad facilitate the transportation of people and goods, it also allowed the mail to travel with unprecedented speed and ease.Cooper, Basil (July 1983). "The TPO story". Some people may think of us as railroad employees, but that's not true because we had to take a a stiff, competitive exam that the post office put out for Railway Postal Clerks, RPO Clerks. And if we passed it, we we got the job. In October 2013, the British Postal Museum & Archive announced that it intended opening part of the network to the public. [18] [19] After approval was granted by Islington Council, work on the new museum and the railway began in 2014. [20] Special tourist trains were installed in late 2016. It was planned to open a circular route, running beneath the depot at Mount Pleasant with a journey time of around 15 minutes, by mid-2017. [21] [22] [23] The museum opened on 5 September. Mail by Rail did not disappoint with the level of research and detail in this book. The Royal Mail System is amazing. The numerous photos in this book helped bring the text to life to see the ways the mail got onto a train and how it was sorted on a carriage.
