About this deal

That said, I had a lot of fun getting to know the dizzying roster of superheroes here, many of which were new to me. T hadn't read too many of these stories before I read Justice, but I now have read a few more and I still think this one is the best, but not by a wide margin. Ross and Krueger lack the ability to focus the script on the necessary moments, and the result is long, dull scenes that don’t impact on the larger plot and make Justice quite the slog if the art alone isn’t enough. Even though, as a crucial part of the plan, Green Arrow and Black Canary don’t get special armour but don’t get brainwashed anyway – no reason why that is. And then when he’s floated there long enough the Phantom Stranger pops up and pings him back to Earth in an instant - my, how convenient! A certain character is in a seemingly inescapable situation for most of the book and it was very well done, so much so that I didn’t have any problem with it being a sub-plot in a much bigger story, but then The Phantom Stranger shows up out of the blue and essentially says “Enough of this, here’s all the stuff you need to be okay again, now let’s head back and save the day.The Justice League—they are known as DC Comics’ finest heroes, and they are prepared to save the world from itself!

If the Green Lantern comics were actually about a guy shepherding an entire section of THE UNIVERSE then I would read that too, but he’s a part-time pilot who spends most of his time on Earth. Justice is an ambitious story that takes every member of the original Justice League (except Firestorm), throws in a whole bunch of other characters that Alex Ross and Jim Krueger grew up with, and has the villains discredit the lot of them by actually helping humanity. There’s a terrible deus ex machina involving The Phantom Stranger that sucked all the drama right out of the book for me. With Ross and Braithwaite's superb, dynamic artwork and Krueger's thought provoking plot, this is a wonderful collection that merits close and multiple readings. If the Superman comics were actually about a modern day messiah coming to terms with his responsibility to lead the world into a new golden age I would read it, but Superman just occasionally punches a monster in the street or throws an asteroid back into space. Setting aside those problems, the actual content here is good and I really enjoyed reading this book. It encapsulates everything I hate about books in general, but especially superhero comics: it’s boring, overcomplicated, excessive, stupid, repetitive, overlong, and extremely pointless.
