A colorful and contrary mix of English, Welsh, and Scots, the Dogs range from the temperamental Father, whose days of preaching were already long past when he suffered brain damage from a falling roof tile, to Romford, a young, cocksure archer who has a habit of getting in trouble.

This is a novel written by in my opinion one of the most readable non fiction authors out there when it comes to medieval history. They disembark on the beach, where they meet a barrage of enemy missiles and must scramble to safety as soldiers from other boats drop dead all around them. Here I think the author really has some fun giving us a whiny Edward, The Black Prince and – my favourite – an Earl of Northampton for whom the descriptions ‘colourful’ and ‘plain-speaking’ don’t do justice. Even the famous "Black Prince", the son of king Edward was portrayed as a drunken, lecherous foolhardy knave, who had to be saved from himself by fellow knights. There is a real lack of tension and conflict in the book which is surprising given its real world inspiration.For a plot that involves a lot of marches and camps you would expect a little more camp fire exposition to assist with building character relationships. His latest book is The Colour of Time, a ground-breaking fusion of art and history with images by pioneering Brazilian artist Marina Amaral.

It’s a clever opening because it makes Dan Jones’s terrific story feel contemporary right from the start, even though it’s set over 600 years in the past. He has written and hosted dozens of TV shows including the acclaimed Netflix/Channel 5 series 'Secrets of Great British Castles'. I wasn’t too sure on his powder addiction however I also believe the author knows his stuff so I went along with it.
