About this deal

When it comes to hand-holding, although as I have already said above, the three largest glass elements are located on the front of the lens, it still does not make the lens front-heavy. I shoot the 200-500mm as I shoot a rifle; you need to know how to hold it steady and pull the trigger slowly and smoothly for the best results. My approach to wildlife photography often involves getting very muddy and wet (and uncomfortable) to get close to my subjects. Unlike the new Canon 100-400mm II that focuses so close that it replaces 70-200mm and macro lenses, this Nikon 200-500mm can't zoom wide enough or focus close enough to replace a general-purpose telephoto. You can turn it and pull it off the back of the lens, however big screw heads poking out of the lens are not comfortable for hand-holding.

When traveling, one can lock the lens at its shortest length of 200mm using a switch on the side of the lens barrel, as pictured below. That because all the Z lenses have been as good or better than the F mount lenses in the same size and class range. As a wildlife photographer, one of the most critical technical aspects is an accurate, fast autofocus system. What I like about the placement of the focus ring, is that it is located at the back of the lens, which is an advantage when hand-holding the lens, since you never actually touch the focus ring in the process. Optical construction consists of 19 elements across 12 groups and features ED glass elements minimising chromatic aberration. stops slower and includes SPORT VR mode for fast tracking during action shots such as motor-sports or planes, on top of this the Nikon Silent Wave Motor (SWM) offers a fast AF.

New is a SPORT VR mode, which claims to allow VR to work well while photographing things that move unpredictably. The lens is obviously not the fastest focuser, but claiming that it is good only for static subjects is not accurate either. It also allows a continuous shooting frame rate and release time lag similar to those that are achievable when VR is turned off. From the little that I’ve used the Tamron (200-500mm, 150-600mm) and Sigma (150-600mm) lenses, I’d say that the Nikkor is clearly sharper than the other two in virtually every situation, every focal length, and every part of the frame when shot wide open. stops of image stabilization, which is remarkable for shooting handheld at slow shutter speeds in low light. I use this lens with Lowepro Flipside 300 (only lens), and the Lowepro Flipside 400 when the camera is attached.
