About this deal

The weak points: The biggest stumbling block of the game is the prominence of book-keeping during the economic phase. Almost 20 years in the making, many elegant solutions have been developed to remove complexity and make the game intuitive.

Space Empires 4X from GMT Games is a fairly simple and clean game that focuses on the 4X genre in space. If you don't mind reading some text for rules and have a drop of imagination to carry the fantistic theme of the game. And I wouldn’t do things differently if given a second chance, as it does take time to grasp the mechanics. Blurb from the publisher: 'Space Empires 4X is a game in the finest tradition of 4X space games - eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate. Treaties can be signed between two empires, varying from the basic trade agreement to full-blown partnerships and even protectorates.

The rules are only 8 pages long for the basic game and increase to 11 pages in length when the advanced rules are included. Decoys are revealed and destroyed if encountered alone by the enemy (enemy does not reveal themselves). Some capability to have permanent resource spaces in deep space to “fight” over would be beneficial.

I would never , ever mark down a game for using cardboard materials over miniatures unless things somehow managed to affect gameplay. If you can somehow get over the pieces behind difficult to move (or peek at, when viewing your own ships), the game is fantastic, offering options that really are not available in ANY 4X game that I have played. Mining Ships always represent a single ship, always stay face-up, and always move just 1 hex per turn. A unit without an Attack Strength (a ‘non-combat’ unit such as a Colony Ship, Miner, MS Pipeline, or Decoy) may not enter a space that contains a face-down system marker, enemy unit, or enemy Colony unless a combat-capable ship also enters the space (from the same or a different starting space).

A unit that has an Attack Strength (a 'combat-capable' unit) may not enter a space containing a face-down system marker (i. Make no mistake; this is no Advanced Civilization of Avalon Hill fame, where war was one of many options.

tokens (which lead to the ships' immediate destruction), super novas, minerals that can be towed, space relics that can be towed, lost in space tokens (or displacement tokens if you prefer) etc. Unit purchases include ship units such as Battleships, Scouts, Destroyers, Ship Yards, Colony Ships, etc. This decision must be made at this point of the game when no chits have been turned over in an adjacent system.
