That said — I whole-heartedly agree: playing at two players removes so much of the tension in the game. It is in the management of your hand, and the sequence in which you play cards, that your strategies will unfold. My initial plays of Concordia were spectacular, and while my enjoyment of a game usually peaks as I explore its depths further and further, I found myself slowly mellowing on my initial euphoria over Concordia as I hit double-digit plays and beyond. I think Concordia is a nigh perfect game, but there are a couple of things that some players might not like.

Five resources in custom shapes does not a theme make; we’re in standard euro territory here – which brings us nicely to the final talking point. This creates a sense of urgency when someone plays something good as you can’t be certain when you’ll see it again. So you not only have to have an eye on what cards you need; you also need to make sure no other player achieves a monopoly on any of the scoring conditions, because each additional god in your hand is a multiplier at the end of the game. The first is setup, in which goods will be randomly distributed, which creates different board states in terms of priorities.out of 5 on BGG, the rules fit on just two double-sided pages, complete with illustrations and examples. You want to maximize each move, since most cards don’t restrict the number of times you can perform the action. Fortunately, Venus allows you to play the regular game as well, and since this is the version I own (w/Salsa), we almost exclusively play the regular, individual game. There’s never enough time to complete everything, and the player who is most efficient will end up as the winner. The app version of Concordia does away with this, immediately providing your total score as well as where you’ve placed against your opponents.

Despite being sans rondel, it still feels like a Gerdts game; epic board, awesome components, snappy turns, deep strategy and tough decisions. My concern is replayability, as at the base level there’s not much variation, but several games in it’s yet to be a factor. Although Concordia feels like it is from 2003, it was actually published just five years ago, in 2013. Each turn, you will play a single card, and each card bears an action you can take, and there aren’t that many different actions in the game. I would absolutely love to see an overhaul of the scoring run down to take this app to the next level and replicate one of the best features of the physical game however even without that this app has done a great job making the move to the digital tabletop.Playing a Prefect card allows you to choose a province, and then all cities in that province generate goods for all players who have a house in those cities. The end game is triggered when a player places their last house on the board, or the last personality card is purchased. On top of that, each advisor’s role is simple to understand, allowing your brain to focus on the strategic puzzle of the game rather than wasting energy attempting to interpret or remember a bunch of arcane instructions. You’re going to start at Rome and expand your trading network by sending ships and people across the land.
