About this deal
This was a crushing and, at times, unhinged story, but it was also filled with so much hope and worth. The amount of times "He got the girl" was mentioned in different ways actually made me want to stop reading because firstly, a girl is not something you 'get'. The story tackles a tough topic in a way that reminds the reader that there's more than meets the eye when judging someone else's journey.
One thing to note, he didn't change throughout the story, his venom never diluted, just distilled to potency and for which I must applaud Kennedy. Check your trigger warnings because this story is heavy, and it's so well written that you feel - FEEL - all of her pain and self doubt, and despair. I'm grateful for books like this and society and media becoming more vocal about abuse because then we lose the ignorance. With no escape in sight, I seek the only freedom left to me—my thoughts, my dreams, and my memories.Iris got her freedom because of her strength, determination, love for her daughter and support from her cousin and BFF Lotus. This book kept me up on a Friday night which is nothing new but I cried intermittently from page 14 to 434.
Don't get me wrong, Iris and August's romance gave me all the feels, but Iris' personal journey in this novel touched me even more.Book heavy going due to the topic, and j found it difficult to read at times because of this, but I still enjoyed and connected to the characters the same. There is plenty of tension and steam too, as well as a bunch of heart warming moments and a sprinkle of the mystic too. They end up spending the night talking and sharing more with each other than they're used to, but the night ends with Iris confessing that she has a boyfriend. Secondly, I’m not going to tell you anything about the plot of this book because I want…I need you to read this just like I did.
