About this deal

And with half a decade now to process that, you’d think that Unicorn might seek to redress the balance.

Two years later we made the move to our present address, 35 The Headrow, where we have remained ever since. One of the clever ways that this is accomplished is of course is using their impressive guest list – who are very often fixtures from the past – to embrace what the future holds.Tech Noir’ finally gets a sequel too, with ‘Tech Noir 2’ bringing Charlie Simpson back to team up with his Fightstar bandmates alongside John Carpenter. This album has been on repeat for me for months as I could always find a song to fit my mood or change it completely. It’s impossible not to bop to, a glaring, neon-drenched synth banger that’ll lodge itself firmly in your skull. Their follow-up three years later, Dark All Day, leaned into industrial a wee bit more and despite this fact that catchiness only slightly wavered.

As far as highlights go, Empress Of The Damned is head-and-shoulders the best song here, partly for its industrialised dance-pop throb, and partly because Lights is such an engaging vocalist that carrying a song like this requires little effort. This review was written by a jaded failed musician or someone who was left by someone for another mate who loves Gunship.Regardless as a somewhat self-professed metalhead, synthwave provided some of the same release that I get from riffs and blast beats but it does so through a completely different sonic milieu. And while that’s more on those loud, isolated voices who’ll spend their time screaming at the defence of an act they have no more personal stake in than said act themselves, you have to believe that Gunship are aware of that. I hate 80s music (or at least I thought it did, growing up in the 90s) but Gunship almost singlehandedly revealed how wrong I was. The saxophone work by Tim Capello is stunning with collaboration also with the legendary John Carpenter.

One of the potential downfalls of this genre is how it is often a rose-colored look at the past by nearly constantly invoking nostalgia. Due to inventory and accounting purposes, we do not exchange items received for different items than originally purchased.

My favorites right now are Tech Noir II (a more upbeat sequel to the original), Empress Of The Damned (there's a lot going on in this song and it has a lot of energy and attitude) and Ghost (the music video is absolutely hypnotizing). At over an hour, Gunship are asking for a lot of your time with Unicorn , especially when its second half is truly trounced by its exemplary first half. British masters of futuristic dark retrowave/synthrock with the next mighty release, driving, nuanced and catchy as it should be.
