The big difference with this 4K iteration of Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth over Arrow's earlier Blu-ray is the corrected framing, so there's no longer too much picture information (including lighting rigs and crew members). The film was a smash hit at the box office, making fifteen times its budget, and went on to garner even more fans on home video.There are some really tricky elements of these films to try and deal with in a 4K restoration, yet Arrow and their team have done a really fantastic job of providing a set of discs that improve over their previous restorations in every way possible. However if you are a sensitive person who is easily shocked, offended or frightened then you need not take this journey as it will only upset you and have a lasting negative effect on you. And while this first film can be objectively looked at now as having any number of glaring imperfections – the acting, bar a demented Andrew Robinson, a disturbingly sexy Clare Higgins and Doug Bradley’s cameo aside, is bargain basement; the plot ignores any form of intricacy and does most of its characters a real disservice; that strange mid-Atlantic setting and wonky accents; while the nightmare logic of the actual and waking dream sequences (the cricket eating hobo who turns into a skeletal dragon, anyone? an 80 minute appreciation of Hellbound, by George Daniel Lea and Kit Power are equally disjointed, but at least they’re in the same room! And even the fact it starts and ends in space – the butt of every franchise gag in the last thirty years started here methinks – even works well with the final reveal of the Elysium Configuration in all its glory.
