It does not matter if you don't know one end of a pan from another or a practiced cook of years standing, this book is a must have. And Delia Smith makes the best roast potatoes :) She might not have the media popularity of some of the other TV chef personalities, but she can sure cook and teach. I am an avid cook and own many cookbooks but this is still my favourite, so much so that I have purchased it for my future daughter-in-law.Delia discusses kitchen equipment, shows techniques such as jointing a chicken, temperatures, dealing with fish and meat, cakes and jams etc.

You don't necessarily get the exotic recipes, though there are some, but what you do get is the basis for doing just about everything. The original glassine wrapper is rather toned and a bit soiled, but the book itself is in very nice condition. Good schools used to teach us how to make all sorts of pastry and cakes, before it became ' technology' on the national curriculum. In addition there are step-by-step colour photographs illustrating basic techniques, such as how to make bread, chutney, marmalade and omelettes.
