For me, This album along with 'Blue Bell Knoll' holds up better than much of their earlier albums probably because the heavy foreground bass that was so dominant on their earlier albums, was toned down to a reasonable level and by this time Robin Guthrie had invested in better drum technology. Bought this for three particular tracks - namely 'Road, River and Rail', the title track and 'Fifty fifty Clown'. EDIT: I still stand by much of what I've written above, but this does sound way better through some headphones rather than speakers in my experience.

The group earned critical praise for their ethereal, effects-laden sound and the soprano vocals of Fraser, whose lyrics often eschew any recognisable language.Need more time to compare but this sounds perhaps clearer than my CD, the drums are maybe slightly better better defined but my first impression is that it does sound overly shrill and exhausting at times. There's also a beautiful detached feeling of travel like on Road, River and Rail which will take your breath away such is the emotion they bring. The following songs have appeared in live performances: “Cherry-coloured funk,” “Pitch the baby,” “Iceblink luck,” “Fifty-fifty clown,” “Heaven or Las Vegas,” “I wear your ring,” “Wolf in the breast,” and “Road, river, and rail. Deciding to scale back the overly pretty sound on Blue Bell Knoll while experimenting with more accessibility the Twins ended up creating their best album since Treasure.

Released in 1990, Heaven or Las Vegas was the band's most commercially successful release, reaching number seven in the UK album charts. I have to confess this is the only Cocteau Twins album i have in my vast labyrinth of sounds and in my humble opinion it is my fave album of any moment.

Raymonde and Guthrie would complete fully produced instrumentals, with the beats coming from Akai MPC 60 MK1 and EMU SP1200 drum machines, Fraser arriving later to add her enigmatic contributions.
