They're obviously Elantrians; that much was clear from the physical description alone, and the names just made it more clear. Mistborn: Secret History consists of twenty-five chapters, and one epilogue, reaching a total 44,981 word count. You get a detailed backstory on how the shards came in to play, and what else is going around in other planets, plus a deep dive in to the realm theory! He decides that he might be more effective fighting Ruin somewhere else -- away from Vin and Elend -- where Ruin has less focused attention.

I thought we would have to wait a lot longer to see Sanderson dive into the Cosmere of it all, but he's actually starting to weave all the connections more and more into his books. Some things that I didn't like as much were how some parts were very disjointed and I feel like this would have very little merit for someone who is a casual Sanderson reader. While trying to get to Vin, Kelsier learns a little about Hemalurgy and how the spikes give Ruin power over those with spikes. He sees a vision of the Lord Ruler's past as Rashek but can't figure out how to use the information.I couldn't have imagined the full scope that Sanderson would go to in this to inform you and excite you about the Cosmere Universe, and of course the fact that it was a surprise novella too was great. The MC here is Kelsier so if you are a fan of him, you should not miss this book as it explains a lot of thing and adds character growth to already existent ones. kinda feel that should have been stated in the description, would have saved me getting my hopes up for something new! Obviously a lot went unsaid by the end of Era 1 trilogy, and I had assumed back then that they'll be revealed in Era 2. Alonoe gets separated from the main group, and he fakes her death by wearing a robe from the fortress and "melting" into the ground, causing the main group to head home. Kelsier, who died in Book 1, ends up having more long-term influence than the woman who survived to Book 3 and saved the world. It has minor spoilers for book 4 so it can be read after it but the important thing is finishing the main trilogy first. As he does, he sees into Preservation's depths and feels his pain and love for his people, so he winds up hugging him in sympathy.

At the very least, in addition to Mistborn up through The Bands of Mourning, I recommend having read Elantris, Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell, and the Stormlight Archive through Words of Radiance. It gives great insight into what Kelsier was doing after his death, between what he was doing before he pops back up in other stories. Tor noted that the novella was an unusual one for Sanderson since it contained "less action, and a lot more time-killing while waiting for action".
