About this deal

Some of the writing is beautiful, some is what I guess is 'stream of consciousness'; interesting, but too long and it gets a bit tiresome. It's a dark story, and some truly vile and horrible things happen to the women in this book, but it never strays into gender-essentialist territory, which is what I usually loathe about those witchy feminist stories.

The plot was so compelling, the pacing perfect, it just flowed beautifully, exactly what I’d expect from Kirsty Logan and her skilful writing. I couldn’t help but feel the heavy burden on my chest when I realised; nothing much had changed since then. The journey of Lux, and her strange companion Else, feels eerily familiar, showing how even after centuries, women with power are still held with suspicion. I'm very pleased to say that I loved the writing again here, but I found the storyline equally palatable. They set out on a journey through the woods together, coming across a troupe of mummers who show her the power of stories - the way they can be shaped and moulded to fit with what we want to hear, the way we can become someone else entirely, and the way stories themselves can evolve across time into something entirely different. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. I truly, truly highly recommend this book to everyone who needs some magic in their life or just a green light to finally be who they are.

It’s definitely manipulative but it’s also brooding and nicely atmospheric and I liked Lux as a character. I must admit that I skipped through Lux's story part of the book as to me it didn't flow very well, a very different writing style. But things in Logan’s vision are almost always excruciatingly unlike how they seem, and Lux’s dreamy idyll is cut short when beauty reveals its awful underbelly. Irgendwo zwischen magischem Realismus, historischem Roman, literary fiction und ein klitzekleines bisschen Fantasy. One of our national writing treasures , Kirsty Logan's latest tale is a deeply atmospheric , sometimes gory but ultimately uplifting . It will definitely go down as one of my top reads of the year, and possibly one of my all-time favourites too. The relationship between Lux and Else was very carefully done, and there was a real slice of humanity to be found in so many of the various characters Lux falls into step with along the way.

the stream of consciousness parts felt super random and were incredibly hard to read so i had to skip them completely. The arrival of a mysterious stranger named Else, just as a group of locals look set to attack Lux in her garden, starts the novel off with a bang. One of our national writing treasures, Kirsty Logan's latest tale is a deeply atmospheric, sometimes gory but ultimately uplifting. It’s little wonder that for a time Lux, who as the novel progresses becomes in turn an actor on a frozen stage, a servant in a hall of delicacies, a food-taster to a lord and companion to a fine lady, is tempted to turn her back on Else’s revenge and set her own dreams of finding freedom in the wild country aside. I have to admit to now becoming a little tired of novels about witches - but I love was Kirsty has done here. Men do awful things not because they're men and men are inherently selfish and horrible, but because society puts them in a position where they can do these things (albeit to a varying degree depending on their societal status) and get away with them. In this witch story unlike any other, Lux and Else join forces to take their revenge on a powerful man.
