About this deal

They sat down at the table to eat, and the men told Babushka of the joyous birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, about to occur. The former title implies the mother character and I suppose this is shown by the outer figure protecting those inside; the latter name is linked to the idea of the Russian grandmother and the very recognizable headscarf that is worn by older generations of Russian women. It also shows us that many of the things that are prized in our modern world are not necessarily vital to our well being. Instead, she finds a little girl shivering in the cold, and a little boy, his tummy rumbling with hunger. They invite Babushka with them on their journey, to which Babushka replies, “What, without washing the dishes?

Baboushka immediately lit her last candle, wrapped a scarf around her head and peeped through her frosted window. No sooner said than done, and soon the three kings were settled in Babushka’s little kitchen, eating mushroom soup and good fresh bread and honey cakes to follow, with as much tea as they wanted. She didn’t hear the sounds of the pipes and drums playing music, and she missed her neighbours whispering in wonder at what the lights were. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home. In modern times, on Christmas morning, when children in Russia find gifts in their beds, they are told that grandma Baboushka had left it for them while they were asleep.Hall’s ( Brother Giovanni’s Little Reward) vibrant illustrations feature jewel tones of pink, purple, turquoise, and gold, setting the snowy landscape aglow as Casey ( A Lullaby for Little One) gracefully delivers a message about selflessness and how kindness begets kindness. Brief telling of the traditional Russian folk story of Babushka, and its associations with Christmas gift-giving.

The illustration in the title is not in the book, rather it's from an old Christmas card, which seems to show a warmer, gentler version of the character. But ‘Babushka’ – which means ‘grandmother’ in Russian – is also a famous Christmas story in Russia about the story of an old woman who met the Three Wise men on their way to see Jesus. There are several underlying messages that would be good for people to take on board and which would be a brilliant basis for discussion in a school environment.

Unauthorized use or duplication of these words and pictures without written permission is strictly prohibited. On her travels she meets her ‘sisters’, all of whom have been taken advantage of by those they tried to help.Baboushka was too old and frail to cut logs of wood to start a fire that would have otherwise kept her warm.
