About this deal

the "it's not just about housing" section leans into cultural exclusion to me in an unproductive way. Kern expounds on thinking before you consume, begging the question, what type of city do you want to live in: one only for the privileged, dripping in racist, ageist, misogynistic attitudes—vapid and shiny without a pulse? Kern acknowledges intersectionality but her arguments often seem very silo'ed; it feels like she's comparing tomatoes to potatoes.

Um bom livro introdutório que peca por ser repetitivo e tocar apenas superficialmente em alguns temas. This format bears the style of a scientific essay, which is not an issue per se, it is just not what I was hoping to read. From the walled city of ancient Jericho to the modern-day metropolis of Tokyo, discover what cities can tell us about our past while also inspiring us to build a better future. Leslie Kern is an associate professor of geography and environment and director of women's and gender studies at Mount Allison University. At once a devastating critique of the limitations of established perspectives on gentrification and a convincing plea for an intersectional approach, this book offers sparklingly clear analysis and numerous possibilities for political action.

art is, of course, a part of the solution and my short experience in LATU has shown me that it's constantly playing an important role in struggle.

But an all-encompassing gentrification model ultimately means nothing if it is impossible to define. Too many references to other authors in the text made it at times a bit of a mash-up: other views could have been more often integrated more elegantly with a footnote referring to the authors. In this clear and smartly written book, Leslie Kern brings together some of the most recognizable and essential elements of urban gentrification, making this familiar and ubiquitous term strange, in the most effective and generative ways. It is exactly this type of academic-but-not-practical understanding” of a term that continues to support de facto whiteness and cultural supremacy–it is a weasel-word way of pushing through forced displacement of non-white non-het non-cis people while ignoring the racialized evils of capital-influxed “progress. Like the author, I am white middle mom who made this place my home to find a cheaper way to raise my kids in an expensive city, opening the flood gates for yoga studios, drag brunch, and oat milk lattes.Gentrification Is Inevitable and Other Lies challenges a number of well-entrenched perspectives on gentrification from the anticapitalist left as well as the market-minded right. Publication dates are subject to change (although this is an extremely uncommon occurrence overall). In my (white, suburban, male) mind, invasive colonial whiteness wasn’t inexorably linked to gentrification, but merely (“ merely”) happenstance due to structural co-incidents. Su principal tesis es señalar que la gentrificación no es un fenómeno natural (del capitalismo) ni uno que sea inevitable (por las dinámicas del mercado). Gentrification Is Inevitable and Other Lies] examines the forces behind displacement in North America and beyond, arguing for an intersectional way of understanding gentrification, one that acknowledges the harms done to working people based not just on class but also on race, gender, and sexuality.

In connection to other works on the topic, I was glad to see reference to Sarah Sculman’s The Gentrification of the Mind, another great read on the topic. Que aunque no se ha puesto suficiente interés para documentarlo, teorizarlo y cuantificarlo, las victorias han sucedido.A very accessible history and examination of gentrification and its devastating effect on communities and neighbourhoods. A stunningly illustrated book of extraordinary city maps, telling the story of human civilisation throughout history. Rather, she argues, it is an continuation of the setter colonial project that removed natives from their land. Kern, author of the much-loved Feminist City, provides a thorough and extremely thoughtful intersectional analysis of gentrification, particularly through the lens of decolonization.
