About this deal

When Mary first arrives the children are out of control and had just made a nanny quit, they weren’t very well behaved at all. Familiar to anyone who has seen the film or the West End adaptation, you can now read all six of these wonderfully original tales about Jane and Michael’s adventures with the magical Mary Poppins. In the 1964 Disney film, she is portrayed by Glynis Johns; in the 2004 Radio 4 drama, she is played by Deborah Berlin.

Miss Andrew attempts to impose herself on the Banks children's lives, firstly by coming to stay at their home, and later by moving next door, but is foiled by Poppins. I do feel, however, that there isn’t as much description of these scenes as there are in Mary Norton’s or E Nesbitt’s books which I’ve read recently, no build up of anticipation as the children wonder what Mary is doing and how she’s doing it and what is going to happen, it’s more the basic fact of her doing it, which is a shame as the anticipation and description makes a scene more magical, and these really are such wonderful fresh fun ideas that it makes me wish the author could have made more of them, I can’t help wishing this book could have been written by Norton or Nesbitt. At the end of the story, after many fantastical adventures with their stern governess, Poppins ‘pops’ out again on the West wind. With her strict but fair, no-nonsense attitude, combined with amazing magical powers, things are never straightforward with Mary Poppins! In 1964 Disney made a movie composed out of the first four of the books of the series, starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke.

He loves flying, as stated in the final story of the third book, when after “opening the door”, Mary Poppins opens him up and he soars up quickly, as if glad to be free.

Later they see Andrew and the stray dog walking up to Miss Lark’s together, Andrew barks at Miss Lark and Mary translates saying Andrew is stating that his friend Willoughby must now live with him in Miss Lark’s house and sleep on a silk cushion in Miss Lark’s room, but that they will never wear overcoats or go to the hairdressers, otherwise they will both go and live elsewhere and never come back. This slipcase, using original artwork, contains all six original Mary Poppins stories: Mary Poppins, Mary Poppins Comes Back, Mary Poppins Opens the Door, Mary Poppins in the Park, Mary Poppins in Cherry Tree Lane / Mary Poppins and the House Next Door (2-in-1 edition). Registered address: Unit 31, Vulcan House Business Centre, Vulcan Road, Leicester, LE5 3EF, United kingdom. Each book inevitably includes some mention of stars, constellations and figures of Greek/Roman mythology. So do not go into this expecting it to be so, its not always fun and spoon full of sugars in this book.

Mary goes to Bert (Herbert Alfred), the match-seller and pavement picture drawer, expecting to be taken out to tea as it is her afternoon off. Mary Poppins comes to the rescue when the Banks's family cook goes on an unexpected leave, teaching the young Banks children the basics of cooking in the process. Jane and Michael observe the wind blowing Mary Poppins, their new nanny, to their door, and they watch fascinated as she slides up the bannisters! And in the country picture where Mary and Bert have afternoon tea, the waiter uses a leading capital for the words ‘it was in the Background’ and for ‘we close at Seven’, why is this, I wonder.

I put it aside for months, thinking I may come back and read the final book, but it have no desire to do so yet. He gets to have seven wishes granted on the first New Moon, after the second rainy Sunday, after 3 May, as a present from his Godmother. It features one of my most beloved characters, Mary Poppins, who is so unique and so interesting to read about. Disney really did a great job turning her into someone you could be a little afraid of at times, but completely charismatic and deep down, a good person.
