About this deal

He is also a man who has become a father and knows my sense of wonder and joy and fear all at the same time. I read this book after Fair Warning and although there was a reference to the The Poet it did not spoil the enjoyment of the book.

That being said, the many twists and turns made it a worthwhile experience (and I definitely still trust Richard's recommendations *). Also fun is the fact it's set in the mid-90s, when high-tech meant plugging a telephone line jack into your computer and waiting three minutes for your laptop to mate with your "computer's mailbox. The book also features the first appearance of FBI agent Rachel Walling, a recurring character in Connelly's novels. When the FBI attempts to block the investigation, Jack is able to trade his knowledge of the other deaths for a role with their team, which includes Robert Backus, the agent-in-charge, and Rachel Walling, who is assigned to handle Jack and becomes personally involved with him. This seems a bit odd, because the protagonist in this book is a newspaper reporter and Connelly was himself a reporter for a good number of years before he became a novelist. In “The Poet”, one of Connelly’s characters, a seasoned FBI agent named Rachel Walling, expresses similar views to the protagonist, Jack McEvoy. The case soon focuses on an online pedophile network, with one particular participant, William Gladden, getting the most attention.

While it was a thoroughly enjoyable read, it simply didn't drag me kicking and screaming into the wee hours reading with bleary eyes the way that his previous Harry Bosch novels did. The investigation leads him to a serial killer known as The Scarecrow, who has worked completely below the police and FBI radar. Also: I was nodding off over the trifling details in the conversations among the various characters; the book easily could have been pared back by a third, or so. Along the way, Jack will become involved with a beautiful FBI agent named Rachel Walling and before all is said and done, Jack winds up putting himself in the sights of the deadly Poet. Michael Connelly breaks these rules in The Poet and in the follow-up novel, The Narrows by mixing the first and third person. In 2002, Clint Eastwood directed and starred in the movie adaptation of Connelly's 1998 novel, Blood Work. For much of the book the guy was shoved around and bland, a dud with little to say -- to the point where I felt ticked off, and never "got" Rachel's interest in him, not remotely.
