About this deal

Elex II is an ambitious and slightly bonkers open world RPG hampered by badly written and unpleasant characters. If it was just a case of jankiness caused by a small, overambitious team then I’d be happy to give Piranha Bytes a pass at least one more time. Sadly, that’s not the case. Elex 2 is, by far, the most unpleasant, mean-spirited and plain nasty game I’ve played in a very long time. Almost everyone you encounter is just a horrible person. They’re generally rude and abrasive, and even the friendlier ones are just annoying. One of your party characters, literally named Nasty, is flat out abusive. I’m assuming that this is supposed to be “mature” or “realistic” but it’s neither of those things. The game is like a twelve year old who thinks that being rude and swearing constantly makes him well ‘ard. These aren’t nuanced, well-rounded characters, they’re flat automatons who are unrelentingly awful instead of having any personality. Not only has its functionality in the open world been improved, but it now has proper uses in combat. Players can “hover” and that allows them to face flying foes in the sky or zoom down to enemies on the ground. Even if the animations are somewhat repetitive, there is nothing more thrilling than seeing Jax do a barrel roll through the sky to melee a flying enemy. Throughout ELEX II you will find many weapons that are better than your commonly found ones. ELEX II offers 29 weapons that are classified as Special, unique, or legendary, here is a list of those weapons and where to find them: Given by hearing about a concert on the radio, can occur very early, directed to the amphitheater north of Bastion.

Elex 2 gives you a map right away, but the game does nothing about marking it for you. You'll need to do that yourself, though it's not as hardcore as you might think. You can see where you are on the map and none of it is clouded or needs to be revealed like some open-world games demand. To place quest markers on the map, head to your quest log and select "mark on the map" when highlighting a quest. Elex 2 is a sci-fi fantasy-themed open-world action RPG that takes place on the hostile alien planet Magalan, the sequel to 2017’s Elex both developed by the German game studio Piranha Bytes most known for their work on the Gothic and Risen series of games. Years after Jax defeated the Hybrid Magalan is still a fractured world, factions still commit endless war with each other over valuable resources called the “Elex”. Again, Jax senses a new threat coming from the sky that will endanger all life on the planet if they don’t put their differences aside repel this new threat. On the gameplay side, it still ****. A minor improvement for the Malee combat, but still bad even compared to other mediocre AA games like Greedfall. Ranged is still OP, like in most PB games, but the newly-includded flying enemies are the worst thing I've seen in a game latelly. Not only are they small and have smaller hitboxes, but they also move around so fast that you can barelly hit. They are more annoying than challenging. The best offering Elex 2 has is its voice acting. Not all earn Oscars, but most of them do enough to keep you invested in the writing, even when it fumbles. Not one voice feels badly casted, and no actor underwhelms. At minimum, they deliver their lines in a presentative way; at best, they apply emotion and tone when the scenario calls for it. Look Before You Leap The difficulty level in Elex 2 can surprise you - a low-level character should remain vigilant when fighting even the weakest enemies. Our beginner's guide will help you during the first hours of the game and explain how to survive in the dangerous Magalan. If you're taking a break from Elden Ring, you're used to having to consider fortifying your strength or dexterity. In Elex 2, at least early on, you'll want to focus on both. Your starting weapon of a lead pipe doesn't help much, and early weapons you'll find require a bit more than your stats demand of both strength and dexterity. Later in the game, you may find it viable to min-max these stats one way or the other, but for now, a bit of a buff to both is ideal. MYOM - Mark your own map Avoid enemies with the skull icon. The skull means that defeating such an enemy will be incredibly difficult. Avoid these enemies until you gain enough levels and get better equipment.

If you take everything the Bastion has to offer it will mean not having to worry about acquiring food or potions for a little while, and you will have items you can sell for decent money later in the game. They had more than 4 years to work on this, a bigger budget and more support from the Publisher... and this is it? A game that reuses 70% of the assets from the previous one but manages to have even less content. Yes, there are more factions now, but they are mostly a variation of the first 3. Morkons are just Clerics without the cool technology stuff. Albs are just Clerics with autism. Berzerkers went from Viking hippies to just hippies and the Outlaws are just as useless as in the first game. Magic seems to also be useless, at least for the Berzerker faction, as most guns you will get will deal more damage by the time you advance well enough into the game to get magic. Also, there seems to be fewer weapons than in the first game, so no more cool stuff like the Flamethrower or Chainswords. Elex II is set on the planet Magalan, which was hit by a comet which brought not only mass destruction for its civilization, but also a mysterious and extremely powerful resource called Elex which gives people magic-like powers. It starts off hard, gets way too easy once you figure everything out and then inflates the damage and health of enemies until everything takes an age to die

One of the first places you need to visit before you continue on your adventure is the Bastion, there you will be able to obtain items such as a large supply of potions which will help you considerably later on in the game. Somehow it all hangs together, even when you add the game’s baddies, a group of techno-organic alien invaders, into the equation. The plot is huge amounts of sci-fi guff and endless exposition, but it seeds just enough mystery in there to hold your interest and does a decent job of foreshadowing the inevitable Big Plot Twist. I also very much appreciated the decision to locate the game in more or less the same place as the original and being able to witness the effects of time’s passage. The high point of this is definitely the Fort and its surrounding environs. In the first game, this was a desert region inhabited by the Outlaws, but the area has been conquered by the Berserkers and terraformed with the aid of their magic tree thingies, making it lush and green. Our guide contains a full walkthrough of Elex 2. The thorough descriptions of all main quests will help you finish the game's campaign. The ambition and execution of character interaction does enough well that its flaws just feel more like hiccups rather than breaks in immersion. It helps that the characters themselves aren’t too developed, but that still plays well enough into what Elex wants to do.Players will be joined by their companions, though. Many familiar faces from the first game return, though there are brand new companions in Elex 2 as well. Each has their own compelling story, if their quests are somewhat repetitive. Generally speaking, players will either travel to a place to kill an enemy or enemies or go looking for something, upon which players will need to kill enemies. Still, the overarching stories of each companion are interesting and varied, and the potential romances of Elex 2 are much more intricate and mature than the first game. Most of these are rather self-explanatory, but if you're light on lore and/or didn't play the first game, understand that Alb, Berserker, and Morkon are different kinds of magic inspired by different factions. You may wish to ignore these entirely if you don't plan on using magic. Otherwise, you'll want to find and focus on learning the skills right for your build. The Cutter: Underground, in the last room of Skyands Dungeon near Epsilara, on upper level on the very Western side of the map(West of Berserkers).

Speaking of Jax, he isn’t any better. No matter what options you choose, he will be rude, angry and shouty at every opportunity. For me, this came to a head during a late game conversation with his son, Dex (who is, for the record, seven or eight years old at most) where I was presented with the option to threaten to beat him. Worse still, at least one of the companion characters will approve of that decision. Even with the general nastiness of the characters in the game, this blindsided me, forced me out of the game and away from my computer for some time. Given by Reinhold, often completed accidentally during An Alb Agent, directed to kill the Reavers south of West Ignadon Castle Ruins and the snow.Elex 2 is very much a Piranha Bytes game. It’s an open-world RPG that cares precisely not one jot about whether you live or die. It’s clunky and janky, but compelling and can be a breath of fresh air when you’re used to a steady diet of over-polished AAA affairs. Sadly, it also has the same problems as the previous game. And the Risen series. And Gothic 3. Presumably the first two Gothic games, but I could never get past their terrible controls. Of course, there’s a tradeoff: Many lines of dialogue end up feeling janky or disorientated when different characters cross paths like this. Unlike most of the tradeoffs mentioned above, I find myself neglecting to feel frustrated with this tradeoff.
