About this deal

Electricity is fundamental in the modern world. In KS2 your students will be learning the basics of how electricity works and the Science Musuem’s ‘Launchball’ is the perfect way to test their electrical science knowledge. Get this game up on your interactive whiteboard and challenge your students to get the ball rolling across the levels, using electricity, wind and other energy to do so. Earth and space: Stargazing Live – BBC MC: But I think that’s a great thing about Power Up, in that it can kind of shine a light on some of the things that you think you remember and you go, ‘Oh, actually do you know what, we’ve come a long way.’

The games we play online tend to be modern first person shooters. Not that I particularly love the quality of them, but they’re just accessible and it’s the sort of consensus. Being quite competent in first person shooters we went straight for the N64 GoldenEye. We were terrible at it. I could not believe the control system was as it was on the N64 until you start trying to play it again. And so there is that funny thing about nostalgia when nostalgia meets reality. MC: Yeah, so that’s one of the things: no actual age restricted games. Nothing that is really family unfriendly in any way. Another one is no games or genres where the only way you can engage with the game is through significant time investment. So there’s some accepted and obvious omissions… I’m not pretending this is the entirety of video gaming represented in one space, because it would be impossible to do that for anyone without a football stadium on their hands that they want to convert. GC: It seems to me there could be a serious anthropological study done here, because I don’t think the relationship between different generations of families and video games has ever been studied. I don’t think anything to do with video games is studied well. Even the ones about whether games are dangerous always end up having a tiny sample size and dubious parameters. It’s all terrible science. I have in the past curated the games to focus on some of the games we didn’t put out during the day. So the likes of Quake or Doom or Wolfenstein or GTA, whatever it might be. And funnily enough, what we find is adults aren’t really interested in playing those games. They want to play the games they played when they were young. MC: lt’s not, and again I’m not trying to say that this is the exhibition of video games. And the reason is, is this is a hands-on gaming experience where you get to fully invest in gaming, physically. You can almost look at it like an enormous object handling gallery, because for national museums… we could never allow everyone to play with all of the objects that are national collections that need to be conserved and are one of a kind. This is really about hands-on with technology, which you rarely get to do.MC: They’re not paid by us, we have an amazing, huge range of volunteering programmes in the organisation, who deliver tours around the museum, do other things, do stuff behind the scenes… In Key Stage 2 your students will start learning about the world around them. They’ll discover how the natural world works, from plants to different animals and life cycles. This quiz is the perfect way to see what your kids have learnt about the natural world, and sharks in particular, while you’ve been teaching them about animals and the world’s oceans. The human body: Build a Skeleton

MC: The fact is, all this consumer electronics, they were bought to be played with for three or four years and not many people decided, or had the foresight to, care for it during its life and then put it away in a box that meant it was resistant to moisture and everything else. So they’re hard to come by. The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons. NON-COMPLIANCE WITH THE ACCESSIBILITY REGULATIONS MC: For Power Up we reached out and we have got a really dedicated volunteer base of people who are there to just engage with the public, to encourage them to have fun, to talk about the consoles. Some of them have got particular niche interests. Some of them are more generalists. One of them is probably the most expert person I know on BBC Micros. GC: The funny thing is I wouldn’t say I was particularly nostalgic. I enjoy retro games but I’d never talk about the ‘good old days’. Things are much better now, in terms of the games and consoles themselves. The other thing with the 8- and 16-bits is just accessibility. And, again, it comes from the benefit of this not being the first time we’ve done this. We have tried putting more 8- and 16-bits out there. We’ve had banks of BBC Micros before. People just don’t really engage with it as much.

ENFORCEMENT PROCEDURE

The major changes focus on improvements to user experience, simplifying flows and removing server dependencies to future-proof its portability. The biggest of these changes relates to the wildly successful ‘create and share’ functionality which now allows user-designed levels to be shared via a simple link. MC: SMG has got really committed, sustainable principles and I want Power Up to reflect that. So we do try and maintain all the equipment in there and fix it. And yes, you are right. Some of that old equipment is simpler and can probably be more easily maintained than a Dreamcast, for example, which for some reason they are quite challenging to maintain. But there still aren’t many of them. I guess it’s a sort of a happy coincidence that I’m in my position and got to be in charge of a gaming experience. And so I ran with it. We could have, arguably, not done this as a permanent thing, but it felt like such a great opportunity, such a great way to engage our visitors, that it’d be silly not to. MC: It does, but… watch this space because we might do an exhibition on the history of video games. But this is a celebration of home video games, with a little nod here and there, to show that we are not ignorant of the fact that the world is much bigger.

So, I haven’t ignored them, but they are definitely not as prevalent in the entire space as some of the… I’d say taking it from the SNES and Mega Drive era onwards, where things got a little bit more accessible and there are still a volume available. Any new PDFs or Word documents we publish will meet accessibility standards. PREPARATION OF THIS ACCESSIBILITY STATEMENT

The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 as they’re not essential to providing our services.

Total Darkness uses digital storytelling to help children recognise how the skills they have and use everyday are useful to STEM.GC: The other thing that you mentioned is that you don’t have any adult stuff, and yet the history of video games is one of extreme violence!
