About this deal

Edinburgh is gripped by the greatest terror it has ever known: a lone bomber is targeting victims across the city, and no one is safe. There are plenty of characters but no confusion. That’s probably because I assumed that the ones from the force are recurring characters. There is a bomber causing carnage with devastating explosions, Luc and Ava must try to get get one step ahead before the bomber strikes again. Dr Connie Woolwine who starred in The Shadow Man also makes an appearance. Reading Helen’s books is like catching up with old friends. You’ve missed them, you want to know what they’ve been up to and you want to be there for them when things go wrong. And boy do things go wrong in ONE FOR SORROW! It would be a major spoiler to discuss the twists and surprises that exist within this novel, which I choose not to do. I would not want to lessen in even a tiny amount the reader’s enjoyment of the book and the revelations to come. I will say, while some of these turns may be expected and some readers may be braced for the turn, there are at least one or two twists that will come out so unexpected that no reader will be expecting or preparing for them.

Be prepared to sit up late into the night as you read, this is a hard book to put down. While it was a little difficult to get started, that may be because it begins with a gripping narrative that leaves you knowing this is not going to be an easy read. The only question left is how compelling it is going to be. My answer, about as compelling as they come. With twists and turns you’ll never see coming, prepare to be gripped by this devastatingly good thriller. Perfect for fans of Stuart MacBride and MJ Arlidge . In their jobs, DCI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach deal with death every day. But when it becomes clear that every bomb is a trap designed to kill them too, the possibility of facing it themselves starts to feel all too real. I have read and loved all of the Luc and Ava series so far. I think its quite hard for a writer of a series to keep up the suspense and thrill for so long, but Helen Fields has managed it and each book gets better. The year is 1905. London is a playground for the rich and a death trap for the poor. When Sofia Logan’s husband dies unexpectedly, leaving her penniless with two young children, she knows she will do anything to keep them from the workhouse. But can she bring herself to murder? Even if she has done it before… The writing is seriously clever, the actions of the killer make this book truly terrifying, but the twists add another level of surprise that truly leave you in awe and on the edge of your seat.

So Fields decided to join her husband David’s media company. It was a successful and exciting move but importantly it meant she could spend more time with her children, Gabriel, now 18, Sololmon, 16, and Evangeline, 12. But her dream was always to write. “I have always loved writing, since I was five years old,” she says. “I didn’t know as a child about becoming a writer but I knew I loved stories.” Helen Fields originally studied law. After that, she worked as a barrister for over a decade. She is currently a successful author and also runs her media company with her spouse. The focus of the story introduces us to very real but believable evil and the character is built up stealthily and expertly. There are also big questions and food for thought about whether actions are ever justified and some excellent and poignant psychological assessments and comments on life and grief. One thing I found odd is the language and dialogues. Except for the places, the book doesn’t say Scottish thriller. It seemed more like something from the UK. Maybe Edinburg is that way (I wouldn’t know). It would work as a standalone, but if you haven't read the previous six books you should really treat yourself. Five for silver, six for gold. When it becomes clear that with every tip-off they are walking into a trap designed to kill them too, Ava and Luc know that finding the truth could mean paying the ultimate price. Seven for a secret never to be told... But with the threat - and body count - rising daily, and no clue as to who's behind it, neither Ava nor Luc know whether they will live long enough to tell the tale...

The case is taking everything they have physically and mentally but they know that every time they attend a scene they could be making the ultimate sacrifice. As they try and figure out who is killing people in the nastiest of ways and what the connection is between them all, Ava has to contend with her grief in losing friends and colleagues, an overbearing supervisor and her frustration of not being able to fix the whole world's woes. Overall, if you want a jaw dropping, fast paced, tension as taut as piano wire read with excellent characters, a rollercoaster plot that has so many twists it’s dizzying and dazzling then this is for you. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t read the other six books (they are good though!) as this one is just begging to be read.

He asked me what I really wanted to do and I said I wanted to try writing. He said he would give me ‘the gift of six months’. He said, ‘You do not have to work, make money or even do any housework. Try to write a book.’”

Compelling, breathtaking and a tense ride from that unbelievable opening scene right to the last word. Brilliant!’ Angela Marsons Though she once walked in life, now all that there is to identify the woman are a bit of clothing and her dental records. It’s a sad state of affairs and the crime is simply tragic while at the same time extremely vexing and distressing for those who knew her.
