About this deal

Dahlia Rebecca’s World is a luxurious semi-cactus flowering variety. An extremely unusual variety where flowers will be a beautiful deep red, a pure soft white or completely bicoloured! Really does put on a beautiful display where no two flowers are the same.

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season and do not allow soils dry out. Plant in a sheltered location to protect your dahlias from strong winds. Rebecca's World was Terry Nation's first children's novel. It's in the style of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum or any number of other fantasies where a young girl travels to a far off land and becomes a hero as she tries to find her way home.I think that the ultimate strength of this book is its charmingly surreal and quintessentially British sense of humor. The protagonist is clearly based on Alice from Alice in Wonderland, and her three companions are somewhat reminiscent of those who accompanied Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. Dahlia 'Rebecca’s World' is a bit of a freak of nature really, it can't make its mind up whether to flower red, or white - or both! You will get a random mix of deep blood red, blush white or mixed flowers all on the same plant. It is very unusual to find something like this which is a stable mix of colours.

Found it! My son is very boysey but has no objection to girl protaganists. I even read him an abridged version of Heidi. I might even try him with my huge collection of Noel Streatfield or The Little Princess. She's does touch it and sees one star outside the window. She bets the people on that star aren't bored and are having exciting adventures. She wonders if she will be able to see them through the telescope. So she looks. She wishes she could go there for a visit. For better and for worse, Rebecca’s World clearly draws heavily on these experiences. The titular lead character is a sparky young girl, bored to tears during a school holiday in her sprawling country home. She has an unmistakably Edwardian quality – clearly reinforced by the book’s interior illustrations – although there’s also a single, slightly surprising reference to her once watching television. Perhaps a leftover from a previous draft? Either way, after unwisely dabbling with her father’s gigantic astral telescope, she finds herself transported across the universe to a decidedly unusual – and curiously unnamed –“Forbidden Planet”. Rebecca lived in a big house in the country. At least it seemed like a big house to her, but then she was quite small." Details: Type Tender Perennial Position Cutting Garden Soil Broad Tolerance Flowers July - November Height 90cm (36in) Group/Species Semi-Cactus Group Group Common name Dahlia Moisture Moist but Well-drained Aspect Full Sun Spread 75cm (30in) Cultivation Pot up undercover in spring, place somewhere light and frost-free and keep moist. Pinch out growing tips at 20cm and plant out after last frosts. Alternatively plant straight into the ground when the frosts are nearly over. Description Dahlias are tender tubers and do best when potted up initially in March or early April, into large pots (2 - 3L) filled with multi-purpose compost. Nation has written a classic (as you can tell if you ever decide to try and buy a copy of your own... phew!). The imagination, the characters and the message all combine into an effortless tale that everyone should enjoy. It is not without its faults, but as a child, the humour and the imagery were astounding. As an adult, it's not too far off the mark, either. My favourite character is still Captain K, the rather useless superhero. I'm pretty sure that will never change, now.

She goes upstrairs and tries walking with her eyes closed on the landing and crashes into a vase. It breaks and water is everywhere. Shes says it's not fair and she will get blamed for that. Those feet," he went on, "are the sorest pair of throbbers in the entire history of feet. Would you like to see them?"

May be susceptible to aphids, capsid bugs, caterpillars, earwigs nibbling flowers, glasshouse red spider mite and slugs Diseases This is a novella about a girl who is accidentally transported to an alien world. She makes some friends - all very unique characters - and discovers that the world is suffering a reign of terror from strange, ethereal creatures called ghosts. Rebecca and her friends go on an adventure to find the one thing that can defeat these monsters. If you find that earwigs are a problem, the organic way to control them is to position pots filled with straw upside down on canes spaced around your dahlias. Best in groups of 5 for best visual effect. Deadhead spent flowers to promote growth of additional flower buds.

One of my all-time favourite books from childhood. Have been trying in vain to find a copy for years and finally got one via interlibrary loan. Not the same as owning it, but for a few weeks at least I get to be a kid again and hang out with Rebecca, Grisby, Kovak and Captain K. UPDATE: Thanks to ‘Joe Dredd’ on the Roobarb’s TV forum for pointing out the Rebecca was, in fact, the name of Terry Nation’s daughter. And to Chris Orton, who added that she also lent her name to the character of Rebec in Nation’s 1983 Doctor Who story, Planet of the Daleks. Grow in fertile, well-drained soil, enriched with lots of organic matter and general purpose fertiliser, in full sun. Pinch out growing tips to encourage bushy plants and stake. Water freely in dry periods. Lift and store tubers in autumn to replant or use as a source of cuttings in spring. If you live in a cool area (hardiness zones 3-7) and you want to save your dahlia bulbs, or more precisely, your dahlia tubers for next spring, you may dig them up before the first frost and store them over winter before replanting them next spring. Store them in boxes, covered with moistened sand in a cool, dark, frost-free place where temperature remains between 45-50 °F (7-10°C).So Rebecca together with her new friends Grisby, Captain K, and Kovak, set off on an adventure to find the last tree and save the world from the Ghosts. Please note, we cannot guarantee delivery on a certain day or time. Delivery to outlying postcode areas may take 1-2 days longer, dependent on your location. Reading it as an adult made me originally see the narrative as a little too fast-paced and thin, but after two chapters, my criticisms were all forgotten. Fifteen years and an English degree may have passed, but I still fell into that book as though I were the same 7 year old sitting cross-legged on the Reading Carpet at Storytime.
