About this deal

The game’s setting in the 40k universe is a treat for fans, offering a chance to command the Space Marines, Orks, Eldar, or Chaos Marines. Each faction has its unique flavor, ensuring varied gameplay. The objective-based approach is a standout, pushing players to adopt dynamic strategies.

Much of the game will be familiar to fans of the video game series. You’ll lead a newly found country to uncover hidden map tiles and establish cities to accumulate resources. Barbarians are sprinkled across the map, city-states are available to trade with and a tech tree imitates that of the original game. Shorter than many other 4X board games, it achieves a nicely balanced level of depth that makes learning it intuitive, but mastering it a joy. The number in the lower right with an "x" is your unit Hull Size and indicates how many hits a ship in the group can take before being destroyed. Hull Size also determines the maintenance cost of the ship, the amount of technology that a ship can utilize, and the construction capacity needed to build a ship at a Ship Yard.In 2006, Strategy First acquired Malfador Machinations and the Space Empires intellectual property prior to publishing Space Empires V. [1] Strategy First still owns the Space Empires intellectual property and has not developed another PC game. A hit will reduce a Homeworld one step (ie: 5), so a Homeworld with 20 CP is reduced to 15 CP, 15 CP is reduced to 10 CP, 10 CP to 5 CP, and 5 CP is destroyed if hit.

I think my first 4X computer game was Civilization. I probably sank countless hours into that game with its various versions. The only way to find out is to send your own ships in to explore. It could be a teeny ship acting as a decoy or it could be a massive fleet amassing on the edge of your systems. This would be pretty impossible to do with a ton of minis on the board. Good player reference sheets make it easy to look up what you are capable of doing based on your current technology levels.

The Combat Phase window appears with opposing ships organized along battles lines and Class level (A through E). Any Decoy units are destroyed at start of Combat. A hit will reduce the Colony one step (ie: 2), so a Colony with 5 CP is reduced to 3 CP, 3 CP is reduced to 1 CP, and 1 CP is destroyed if hit. A newly colonized Planet with a grounded Colony Ship on it also only requires one hit to destroy. The empty Planet may be colonized again in the future. Damaged Colonies function normally and will grow again in the next Economic Phase. You heard me. This is just a small 8.5 x 11 x 2 box filled to the brim with cardboard chits and tokens, paper sheets and a medium sized game board. After each player chooses a Homeworld location, their remaining Home System counters are randomly placed face-down, and the rest of the board, known as Deep Space, is populated randomly with face-down counters. Initiating Colonization: Move your Colony Ship onto the Planet and Colonize it. Your crew will dismantle the Colony Ship to start your new Colony. Your Colonies grow during future Economic Phases, from 1 CP, to 3 CP, to 5 CP maximum. The best 4X board game that doesn’t look like a 4X board game Playing your cards right is crucial to ensuring your civilisation goes down in history. | Image credit: Czech Games Edition
