With great weather and surf conditions all year round, the prime time to surf in Portugal is between October and April. This time of year means big, powerful waves. Unfortunately, it also means cold water, so get ready to strap on your wetsuit. The average water temperature in December stays around 59°F (15°C) . In the UK (and much of the world) autumn and winter swells bring in bigger, cleaner and more consistent waves. Compared to the UK’s one to four foot summer ‘wave-lets’, winter regularly sees waves of over four feet and they can reach up to twelve foot. Sri Lanka is a swell magnet. The water is always warm and the waves are not too aggressive, which makes the country a great destination for those learning to surf or progress on green waves.
