About this deal

The role of ED elements within binoculars is to reduce colour fringing (or chromatic aberration [CA] to give it its proper title). With the sun behind me it's no surprise I couldn't notice any CA on the outline of an oak tree. The Viking Peregrine delivers incredibly detailed image quality thanks to the lenses. However, it is important to evaluate key factors such as the FOV available. This is particularly important when using these binoculars for activities such as birdwatching. James rounded off his review with a short and precise overview of his thoughts of our Viking Optical Peregrine ED 8X42 Binoculars; saying that the binoculars are “lightweight, bright, sharp and responsive binoculars with a ‘modern’ feel, courtesy of the smooth rubber armouring. We like these binoculars, we like them a lot.” The Viking Peregrine ED binoculars certainly bring a lot to the table with the specs and features that it offers. However, it is important to evaluate how well this performs during long-term use. Thankfully the Viking Peregrine ED binoculars are seriously impressive in every aspect.

Kestrel, merlin and peregrine... all birds of prey, and all names of Viking binoculars. We might all have our favourite, but I'd think we can all agree the peregrine sits top of the podium for its physical prowess and unrivalled speed. In use then, quite remarkably, you can almost see as wide an image with the 10x42 Peregrine ED as you can with the 8x. like a bit more rigidity at each stop. While they don't exactly slip down, it doesn't take much pressure to change which position they're in, unlike the Kestrel ED and Merlin ED which are more secure.Inside the nicely presented box you'll find a soft but not very padded, velcro-closing case, which doesn't have its own strap but rather allows for the binocular lanyard to hang outside should you wish to carry the binoculars

This company is not known much in public but Kamakura Koki supplies its products to not only to camera makers in Japan but also to the manufacturers in the US and Europe as an OEM manufacturers.A certain depth and richness of colour is evident from the outset, along with an overall warmth to the image, without any yellow tones. Contrast is also good, and when using the Peregrine just prior to dusk none of this was really lost and the image remained acceptably bright. If you’re looking to upgrade to a premium binocular but you’re on a budget, the Viking Peregrine range is perfect for you. They offer premium optics and quality at a fraction of the price of most high-end binoculars. The Peregrine ensures you get the most out of your nature-watching experience and are ideal for beginners and experts alike.

These binoculars offer the highest possible image quality. This is largely due to the inclusion of the ED glass. The glass helps to ensure the image is consistently crystal-clear and without any flaws. Regardless of your environment, you can be sure that the image will be clear and defined. Viking maintain their tradition of developing incredible optics which are available at a cost-effective price. The afore-mentioned focus wheel takes roughly 1 ¼ turns from close focus to infinity. As is to be expected, they are nitrogen gas filled to prevent internal fogging and are completely waterproof.Their closed bridge roof prism design is unfussy but very functional – they feel snug in the hand, light (600g) and well-balanced, but well-built, too. The rubber armour is robust (and also feels good and ‘grippy’ to the touch). Viking quote close focus on both models at 2 metres, which matched almost exactly with my own measurements. The eyerelief on the 8x42 is 20mm and the 10x42 has 15.7mm - I found the 8x42 most comfortable with Yes! The moons of Jupiter, or the rings of Saturn, for example, can both be seen with 8x42 binoculars on a clear night. Which is better for birdwatching – porro prism or compact roof prism?
