The 43A6GTUK’s colour palette can skew rather pale at times, too - especially with skin tones and in very bright HDR areas. Unsurprisingly, this issue extends to noticeable clipping of shades and detail in near-white parts of HDR pictures. Apart from a chunkier strip along the bottom of the frame, the bezel surrounding the A7200G’s screen is very slim indeed; viewed straight on, the Hisense is almost entirely screen. The surround is tidy, smooth and properly finished, and even across the bottom of the screen it’s not what you’d call intrusive, while the ‘Hisense’ and ‘ Roku TV’ branding carried on the bezel is nicely understated. Finally, LED TVs are your standard TV display panels. They work similarly to QLED TVs but can't compete in terms of brightness and colour range. That said, many modern LED TVs still look brilliant - perfect for saving some cash. The apps appear along the centre of the home screen, and above this is content related to the app currently highlighted. Beneath the apps are rows of content based on recommendations, while at the top are icons for searches, inputs, settings, recordings, and the TV guide. There’s also extensive audio and video file support for anyone wanting to stream their own content. More expensive TVs hoping for a picture horror show from the 43A6GTUK should brace for disappointment. The set is actually anything but a video nasty, producing pictures that in some ways humble those of some much more expensive models. Refresh rate refers to the number of times a TV screen refreshes the entire on-screen image, per second. This count is measured in Hertz, or Hz. A 60Hz TV will refresh an image 60 times, and a 120Hz TV will refresh an image 120 times.

Be aware that those feet are at either end of the frame, though, so if you’re not going to wall-mount this Hisense TV you’ll need a fairly wide surface for it to stand on. If you are tempted to put it on the wall, mind you, be aware of the A7200GTUK’s woefully unfashionable 85mm depth. This is not the flattest flatscreen around by any means. Contrast is a method of referencing the difference between the lightest and darkest images a TV can produce. The measurement is written as a ratio: for example, 4,000:1. Typically speaking, the higher the ratio, the better your viewing experience will be. Max light output HDR (high dynamic range) while displaying small white square taking up 60% of the screen (measured in Nits)

Resolution refers to the number of pixels on a display, the greater the pixels, the sharper the image. A 4K display has 3840 x 2160 pixels, regardless of whether that's a 43-inch TV or a 65-inch TV.

Hisense has included Dolby Vision support, and it’s with less capable displays like the A6G’s that the format’s dynamic metadata really shows its benefits. It allows HDR content to be mapped more precisely to the display’s capabilities, and watching exactly the same test material in Dolby Vision reveals HDR images free of any clipping and with saturated but natural-looking colours. The main difference lies in the resolution. A 1080p TV has a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels, while a 4K TV boasts four times the pixels at 3840x2160. On a 43-inch screen, 4K provides sharper details, especially noticeable with closer viewing, making it ideal for larger screens. What are HDR and HDR10+? This volume limitation does mean the set can’t keep escalating its sound as far as the most raucous scenes would like it to, resulting in a rather thin, swallowed effect right where you’d hope for the speakers to really be letting rip. This is hardly unusual for the TV world, though, and impacts many sets that cost way more than the 43A6GTUK does. HDMI Audio Return Channel, or HDMI ARC, is a feature that allows soundbars and surround sound systems to operate with fewer cables. A single HDMI cable (1.4 or higher) is connected from a TV’s HDMI ARC to an HDMI ARC port on a soundbar or surround sound receiver. This connection will deliver audio from another device connected to the TV through the soundbar - a gaming console, Blu-ray player, or media streaming device.

As far as set-up goes, the Hisense menus are a) very brief and b) don’t have all that much impact on the picture or sound you take receipt of. It’s possible to make fairly fundamental changes to colour temperature this way, but in all honesty the rest of the settings only fiddle around the edges of the A7200G performance. Still, this compares favourably with Philips, which wants you to invest the best part of your day in setting up your TV. Avoid go-slow connections: Some ISPs might intentionally slow down your internet connection, a practice known as throttling, especially when they detect data-intensive activities like streaming. A VPN can help bypass throttling and maintain a more consistent and higher-quality streaming experience. The 43A6GTUK is another lesson from Hisense in how you can no longer judge a TV by its price point. Yes, there are weaknesses - its unhelpful presets, for example, and the slight de-saturation and occasionally banding in its colours. The bottom line, though, is that the 43A6GTUK offers more features and delivers a much greater level of picture and sound consistency than we’d have thought possible for so little money. The 43A6GTUK’s sound is potentially bolstered by built-in Dolby Atmos decoding, though it remains to be seen if such a cheap TV has a good enough sound system to really derive much benefit from what Dolby Atmos can do.
