Once we arrive at the surprise twist about V'Ger, it becomes clear that the plot is grappling with challenging philosophical themes about the concept of God, the purpose of existence and the difficulty of defining those observations outside of our cognitive experiences. One of my favorite aspects of Wise's film is the entity V'Ger while in a robotic replica of Ilia wrestling with understanding "carbon lifeforms" as living creatures, as opposed to being an infestation and measuring life according to the entity's own likeness. Granted, the ride getting there is arguably drawn out, and the production is not without its flaws. But for me, the journey is well earned and rewarding, and the feature-length debut of the crew of the USSEnterpriseultimately feels like a smart, elevated episode of the original television series." 4/5

We want to take a moment to note our experience with The Final Frontier. That movie, released in 1989, is famous (or infamous) for less-than-ideal visual effects, even compared to its predecessors. If you see this movie in 4K/HDR, some scenes, like the journey across the Great Barrier or Sybok’s introduction in the desert, will look fabulous, with bright, vivid colors that show off landscapes and the creative but lower-budget visual effects done by Associates and Ferren.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture Review

The final voyages of the USS Enterprise-A are now about to be completed, as Paramount Home Entertainment announced today that Star Trek V: The Final Frontier and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country will finally arrive this September to round out the six-film 4K UHD Blu-ray collection — along with Robert Wise’s Star Trek: The Motion Picture — The Director’s Edition in both a standard and limited-edition 4K release.

The other question not yet answered: when will these remastered versions of the Star Trek films land on streaming services? We know that the still-in-development Director’s Edition of The Motion Picture will arrive first as a Paramount+ exclusive, but there’s not yet any information on when we’ll see these other 4K editions outside of the Blu-ray format.
