I fell asleep for an 90 minutes or so soon after that and I got no more bites although midges were lazily buzzing around me when I woke. The product doesn't have any perceptible odour at all and the one application in the morning has been all I needed to ensure a virtually bite free day - highly unusual for me. Aembleton, DEET is the thing, sometimes a contraversial compound, but it seems to be okay as you don’t go daft with the amount you use. The Ultrathon range is available in an eye catching 60ml lotion or a convenient 125ml spray. It comes in two formulas, 25 per cent DEET content for day-long protection of up to 8 hours or 34 per cent DEET content for extended protection of up to 12 hours. All the variants seem to to leave a slightly oily feel on the skin - but this does disappear after about half and hour so I didn't find this to be too much of a problem. Danger. I've been using all three Ultrathon variants in the last couple of weeks during day long walks in the Peak District (some near water) and even for gardening which is often a source of really annoying bites for me. Ultrathon came already recommended, being endorsed by the UK military and Ray Mears, but as neither of them are spending much time in the west coast of Scotland these days, I think the home team should have a harder time being convinced.

The magic spell is broken, but it looks like the Ultrathon works in the real world too. I’ll keep carrying the Ultrathon and I’ll swap between the cream and spray, they’ve got different concentrations of DEET, the spray having 25% by volume to the cream’s 34% but still proving effective on a trip to the centre of the midge universe. With the added benefit of being splash and sweat resistant, the need for re-application is reduced.
