HorizonSteady helps to eliminate camera shake in all directions and even horizontally corrects tilt at any angle. That means footage can remain horizontally level, even through heavy bumps and 360-degree rotations, creating the effect of a perfect horizon without any post-production, even in off-kilter pursuits like surfing. Also illustrated in the above video is horizon leveling, a feature introduced in the Action 2. This keeps footage looking steady, compensating for tilts at up to 45-degree at 4K resolution, and able to handle 360-degree rotation at 2.7K without so much as a tiny sway appearing in your footage.

Osmo Action 3 charges from 0-80% in as little as 18 minutes and 0-100% in 50 minutes. This native fast-charging support is a first for action cameras. It’s also worth highlighting that an improved heat management system enables continuous 4K/60fps recording until the battery runs out of power. You can of course use your smartphone and the DJI Mimo app as a form of remote control, and it works brilliantly thanks to simple controls, big screen viewfinder and solid wireless connection. Using the app also enables livestreaming. Interestingly, Osmo Action 3 is the first action camera with dual touchscreens, which means you can access settings from any angle while keeping the camera in perfect position.The other place the Osmo Action 3 impresses is battery life. DJI claims 160 minutes at 1080p. I only managed 140 (with the rear screen off, the front screen used about half that time), which is slightly more than I managed with the GoPro Hero11 (which claims 137 minutes, I got 124 minutes). Moving to 4K at 30fps, the Osmo Action pulled off 75 minutes to the GoPro Hero11’s 70 minutes. Also impressive is the recharge time—I was able to get the batteries fully recharged in 52 minutes. (Image credit: Adam Juniper / Digital Camera World) As you can see from the image gallery above, the DJI OSMO Action 3 takes decent photos, although due to the wide-angle lens mounted on the action cam, up-close images can be distorted. Not sure if anyone would use the OSMO Action 3 to shoot portrait photos, but I'm telling you, it's not suitable for that kind of work. I recommend turning off push notifications, however, as DJI has unfortunately opted to use Mimo as a delivery system for product announcement and sale notifications. I hate seeing ads on my phone's screen, and camera apps shouldn't add to the noise. Currently, only English and Mandarin Chinese are supported for this function. Please use it in quiet environments and ensure clear and accurate pronunciation.

Generally speaking, DJI has done a great job of making the Osmo Action 3 feel robust, though the lens frame does protrude slightly around the sides of the camera. This could catch in the heat of the action, making it a potential weak point versus the GoPro Hero line, whose lenses are flush with the top and sides of the camera. Tested in a -20° C (-4° F) laboratory environment while recording 1080p/30fps video with EIS disabled and both screens off, and should be used for reference only. US customers may have extra concern about transmitting data to DJI, as the company is on the Treasury Department's Entity List due to allegations of the company's involvement in digital surveillance of the Uyghur ethnic minority. Battery capacity has been increased over the Action 2, from 1300mAh to 1770mAh, although interestingly DJI’s own figures suggest the Action 2 can last a little bit longer: 180 minutes to the Osmo Action 3’s 160 minutes (when recording 1080p at 30fps, with image stabilisation turned off).

The hydrophobicity of the front screen, rear screen, and Lens Protective Cover is achieved through an AF coating, which may be affected by scratches. The least impressive part of the Osmo Action 3 is the still photos. With only 12 megapixels available in this sensor, the results just don’t match up with what the GoPro Hero11 is capable of with its 27-megapixel sensor.
