About this deal

More experienced climbers might still enjoy the Defy because of their affordability. While I don’t recommend them for outdoor climbing, they make a good pair for gym climbing if you want to preserve your more aggressive – and expensive – shoes for your outdoor outings. We rounded up 7 of the best beginner climbing shoes on the market and put them to the test to find the top option for new climbers.

The Defy does offer good sensibility, which is good for face climbs, slabs, and almost all gym routes. The toe box is more on the pointy side. You will need to try the shoe on to see how this fits. Climbers with wider feet may not like this feature. heel Moccasyms are known to stretch quite a bit. For the best fit, it may be best to size at or a little below your street shoe size. This shoe probably isn’t the best choice for all beginner climbers. This is not a shoe I would want to climb slab in, nor would it be my shoe of choice for toproping or endurance work. The Defy is technical enough to smear along slabby terrain or grip an overhang, and comfortable enough for a day climbing indoors, or a multi-pitch epic. The Defy has a neutral last, a flat toe, and comes at a price tag that is very wallet friendly. It seems like this shoe is almost always on sale.

A Brief Word on Fit

Its real advantage is price. It’s the cheapest shoe in our test as of this writing. On sale, it’s a steal. It’s also a slightly better performer (albeit less comfy) than the next cheapest shoe, the Tarantulace. Synthetic: Synthetic materials don’t stretch like leather does, which is helpful during sizing. Synthetic uppers will generally stretch a half size at most, and sometimes not at all. The downside is that synthetic shoes tend not to breathe as well, which can make for sweaty feet. I did full tests of each shoe on slabs, overhangs, roofs, and faces of all types. I recorded my impressions of each, then performed head-to-head tests to see where each shoe thrived. It was fine on boulders or in the gym, but on longer sport climbs I found myself grimacing by the time I clipped the chains.

Velcro and slip-on shoes are more convenient, and lace-ups allow a more precise and customizable fit. As long as you can find a fit that works for you, the choice is down to personal preference. The single tongue of a lace-up next to the overlapping tongues of a velcro closure. Rubber And while the stiff sole is easy to stand on, it takes away some sensitivity. That’s not a deal-breaker in a beginner shoe, but it detracts from the Defy’s all-around usability. It’s priced competitively and designed like most beginner shoes: flat, simple, and comfort-oriented. The Finale is an entry-level climbing shoe with some features that will help you start to get a feel for what a more high-performance shoe might be like. Like La Sportiva’s top models, this shoe sports Vibram's stiff XS Edge rubber, padded mesh tongue, a tensioned heel rand, and the company’s proprietary P3 system that holds the downturn of the shoe over time. However, given the Finale’s unlined construction (great for out-of-the-box comfort) and durable 5mm sole, it’s not lost on us that this shoe is tailored toward new climbers. Why for beginners: These shoes are forgiving in terms of fit and provide a flatter sole profile, which helps beginners learn proper footwork and technique without causing excessive discomfort.

Evolv

The Five Ten Niad Moccasym shoe is a new twist on an old classic, the Five Ten Anasazi Moccasym (which referred to an outdated term for the Ancestral Pueblo and was renamed–you can read more about this in our Mesa Verde article). The very similar Niad Moccasym is a great all-around slip-on shoe that doesn’t sacrifice any comfort. If your climbing shoes stretch more than anticipated, you can try using insoles or inserts to reduce the interior volume slightly. However, keep in mind that significant stretching may indicate a misfit, so consult a climbing shoe expert if the problem persists. You may need to get a different size. Is it normal for climbing shoes to hurt my big toe or toenails? It’s not a star performer or the most comfortable, but the Drifter is strong enough in all categories to merit a decent score. Before you try any climbing shoes on, you’ll want to make sure you’ve been walking around for a bit. Feet swell throughout the day and even some street shoe guides recommend trying shoes on at the end of the day to get the most comfortable pair. Feet also swell while climbing—and you’ll want to make sure they have that bit of extra space they need when they do.

Use shoe deodorizers: To prevent odor buildup, consider using shoe deodorizers or inserts made of cedar or activated charcoal. These help absorb moisture and keep your shoes smelling fresh. Storage We ended up with nearly 20 contenders for Best Beginner Climbing Shoe that we put into a comparison chart for you to view. We then tested the models that looked promising to verify and add to our findings. However, for many of us, this is unrealistic. Even if you live near an outdoor retailer, very few offer the selection of amazing shoes can find online. Prices are almost always cheaper onlineand you don’t need me to tell you how great next-day delivery is. Consideration for beginners: Some moderate shoes can be suitable for beginners who want a bit more performance without sacrificing comfort entirely. However, it's crucial to choose moderate shoes with a comfortable fit.

From impressive new models to tried-and-true classics, below we break down the top shoes of 2023 for beginner climbers

Synthetic/Leather: A couple shoes we tested have an upper made of a synthetic and leather hybrid. It only stretches slightly, but remains comfortable and relatively breathable. But by the time testing was drawing to a close, I dreaded putting on the Origins. I found myself slipping off of problems I had walked through moments before. The Defy is one of Evolv's best selling climbing shoes and a great all-rounder. It has gone through several technical upgrades making it an even greater choice for beginners all the way to advanced climbers. Ensuring you get the right size might seem like a hassle, but it will pay off in the long run. This shoe is already not great at edging, so if you buy a pair that is too big you run the risk of them edging very poorly.
