About this deal

Oud is far from new. It has been (and still is) a huge part of Middle Eastern perfumery, and is used in Japanese and Indian cultures as incense. Modern day perfumers and perfumeries are now using oud in smaller amounts (think of it as a chef seasoning a dish) to bring that touch of richness and longevity to a scent. In ELLE's edit of the best oud perfumes below, you'll find fragrances that have plenty of breathing space and freshness to make them easy to wear while still capturing the magic of oud. Oud but make it modern and oh-so-chic. As our Lavender database section states: "Depending on the sort, lavender essential oil can have very sweet or distinctively sharp aroma. French lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), for example, has a sweet floral aroma while Dutch lavender (Lavandula intermedia) contains higher levels of camphor and other terpenes, having very strong aromatic and sharp odor. Essential oil extracted from Lavandula intermedia is named Lavandin. This hybrid lavender has completely different chemical and therapeutic properties, even though it finds its use in the perfume industry for its refreshing notes." Now we have a major trend, with major pillar fragrances such as 2019 YSL Libre (the name inspired by the little known former vintage called Eau Libre, which fascinatingly launched as a shared fragrance) and Guerlain's Mon Guerlain (2017) which was so successful - or designed so from the start - that it already boasts four variations of the original Eau de Parfum formula: the Eau de Toilette, the Eau de Parfum Intense, Mon Guerlain Florale and Mon Guerlain Bloom of Rose, plus a couple of limited editions. Wow! The shape of its crystallized bottle will arouse in you the desire to seize it and to monopolize it. Once acquired, you'll never get tired of it. From the first use, you will feel the need to absorb these desirable and sublime scents. Seductive and attractive, Ahmed Al Maghribi Lavender Oud will increase the power of your presence as well as that of your entourage. Its oriental fragrances will delight everyone, no matter where you are.

Burberry Brit Rythm for women (2014) complements them with its claim to English lavender growing in Kent (a truly British referent), but smothered under the neroli, the Givaudan molecule Petalia, reminiscent of peony, and musk notes. It smells of those abstract sweet and sour scents of woody floral musks that Narciso has progenited for over a decade. Where is that lavender? No wonder Mon Guerlain has such a successful course, as it was designed to be an almost identical relaunch of the already well received Mon Exclusif, a fragrance originally meant to become your very own by personalizing the bottle and the name label, but which became so very own to enough women that the company decided to sell it to all women, rendering it less...exclusive in the process. The base notes of Patchouli and Musk provide a solid foundation for the fragrance, enhancing its longevity and adding a touch of sensuality. The earthy, woody nuances of Patchouli complement the oud beautifully, while Musk adds a subtle, inviting sweetness.Caron's Pour un Homme(1934) gave lavender a distinctly fluffy, vanillic underpinning, like silk boxers under a suit, for men to be sure, as claimed by the name, but suitable for women too. Although not officially aimed at women, yet it's the continuing cult of this particular scent, well into the 2000s, with several online critics praising it profusely, which prompted the popularity of the combination of lavender with vanilla and amber or musk, to appeal to women.

Everyone can perceive scents completely different from each other, so we can’t tell you exactly what each scent smells like and how it will smell on your skin but we can try to express how they smell to us! Here's a selection of the very best oud fragrances for men available right now. And if you want to broaden your scented horizons? Take a look at our guide to the best men's fragrances. Further examining the contemporary take on lavender aimed mainly at women, such as Chanel's Jersey from their Les Exclusifs range, one can see how decades of musk use in fragrance has spoiled us into mistaking the scent of "clean" for something else entirely. They smell clean and comfy, but not because of the lavender per se, it's because of the musks and the sweeter elements! We were completely blown away by this beautiful blend fromChloé that’s inspired by the perfumer’s memory of his motherwalking through the heat of the garden with lavender in her arms. Celebrating the Provencal flower in all its effervescent glory, this is the most realistic lavender scent we’ve come by. Delicate, fresh, and sunny – its mood-boosting aroma is the perfect scent for summerand one we can imagine misting onto a linen white dress with a glass of palerosé in hand.

Brand

Agarwood (also known as oud) is precious, intense, mystical and very inspiring,' says Guerlain's perfumer Delphine Jelk. The brand's well-versed education team (if you get the chance, the in-store fragrance consultation is a worthwhile experience) also adds that oud 'is a rich, complex scent. It's a resin that only exists when an Aquillarius tree is infested with fungus. Oud can be described as smoky, almost tobacco-like with a vanilla note. It has an amazing balance between a leathery and a woody scent with a honey note.' Ahmed Al Maghribi Perfumes first started as a hobby of its founder - Mr.Kafeel Ahmed. His passion for perfume making was so intense that it has evolved into being one of the most loved perfume brands in the region. During this 20 years plus journey, a lot of new fragrances have come into existence. However, the ones that they initially started with, are even today of key essence. The British equivalent, where lavender grows but achingly pushed to its botanical extremities, Yardley's English Lavender (introduced in 1913), never dared to imply it was a scent for evening, even though it does exhibit a sip of bedtime cocoa. The British reinvigorated this Edwardian concept, by the way, in Lavandulaby Penhaligon's in 2002, a still-traditional lavender fragrance, but in a more soothing-to-the-ear British accent, as compared to the harsher tonalities of their Teutonic relative. These both serve as a retro-smelling reference which serves as to remind us how lavender as a concept has changed through the years. At its heart, the fragrance takes center stage with the inclusion of Natural Oud Wood and Natural Agarwood Oil. Oud, often called “liquid gold,” is the star of this composition, exuding a deep, woody richness that is both powerful and elegant. Its presence is a testament to the allure of this precious ingredient. Dark, a very deep and powerful fragrance, could be perceived as slightly masculine but could also be great as a base when layering, adding something slightly sweeter to create a fresher feminene fragrance. A great winter scent, it has been kept for the colder days. Opens strong, very true to character. Metallic, rose/geranium with rich fruit notes both fresh and dried fruits. Subtle spice facets particularly green cardamom, cumin and a hint of saffron. Mellows into rose oil facets, slightly increased metallic/geranium sensation with more pronounced saffron highlight and warm cumin texture as it wears. Incense and resin notes; frankincense, myrrh and opoponax. The latter showing their true character much later than frankincense notes.

While taken very seriously in the Middle East, oud has only caught on in a big way in the UK in last few years. It is derived from the tropical agar tree, which is thought to originate in Assam in India. When the tree is infected by a mould known as Phialophora parasitica it reacts by producing a dense, dark and fragrant resin to protect itself. It is the resin-embedded heartwood of the tree that is the source of oud. If you’re after a scent that’s entirely unique and original, turn your attention to Music For A While from Frederic Malle. Unlike any other fragrance we’ve tested, this perfume will have you perplexed (in a good way, hopefully). Opening with a hefty hit of lavender and anise – it smells extremely overpowering at first and a little like soapy licorice. To be completely honest, we weren’t hooked at first sniff – but stay with it as this is a complex fragrance that really evolves on the skin.Badee Al Oud (Oud for Glory) Perfume / Eau De Parfum by Lattafa is a fragrance that pays homage to the greatness of oud, one of the most cherished and revered scents in perfumery. Ahmed Al Maghribi – Oud Lavender. Този специален аромат, ще ви плени с вълшебните си съставки: първокласен ууд, лавандула и масло от агарово дърво и ще ви пренесе в магичния свят на Ориента. Nowadays, it is the vanillic and licorice nuanced lavenders which are featured in any product that aims to appeal to women or women buying for babies and children. To wit, most children's products for the bath and body which claim "relaxing lavender" are mostly featuring a blend of musk with vanilla and abstract notes of extraterrestrial flowers grown on the moon; lily of the valley, jasmine and delicate, unreal roses. And this explains the divide that lavender produces; some people love the medicinal properties they have come to know from real lavender, some people abhor them, confused by the artificial construct that is advertised as "lavender" but really isn't. The scent itself varies considerably depending on the wood used, where the tree was grown and whether the tree itself was cultivated or naturally infected. The fragrance is – unsurprisingly – described as warm and woody with a slight hint of damp rot, while some varieties are smoky and sweet. It can be very potent so not one for the faint-hearted.
