Oud is far from new. It has been (and still is) a huge part of Middle Eastern perfumery, and is used in Japanese and Indian cultures as incense. Modern day perfumers and perfumeries are now using oud in smaller amounts (think of it as a chef seasoning a dish) to bring that touch of richness and longevity to a scent. It's a resin that only exists when an Aquillarius tree is infested with fungus. Oud can be described as smoky, almost tobacco-like with a vanilla note. It has an amazing balance between a leathery and a woody scent with a honey note.' Ahmed Al Maghribi Perfumes first started as a hobby of its founder - Mr.Kafeel Ahmed. His passion for perfume making was so intense that it has evolved into being one of the most loved perfume brands in the region. During this 20 years plus journey, a lot of new fragrances have come into existence. However, the ones that they initially started with, are even today of key essence. The British equivalent, where lavender grows but achingly pushed to its botanical extremities, Yardley's English Lavender (introduced in 1913), never dared to imply it was a scent for evening, even though it does exhibit a sip of bedtime cocoa. The British reinvigorated this Edwardian concept, by the way, in Lavandulaby Penhaligon's in 2002, a still-traditional lavender fragrance, but in a more soothing-to-the-ear British accent, as compared to the harsher tonalities of their Teutonic relative. While taken very seriously in the Middle East, oud has only caught on in a big way in the UK in last few years. It is derived from the tropical agar tree, which is thought to originate in Assam in India. When the tree is infected by a mould known as Phialophora parasitica it reacts by producing a dense, dark and fragrant resin to protect itself. It is the resin-embedded heartwood of the tree that is the source of oud. If you’re after a scent that’s entirely unique and original, turn your attention to Music For A While from Frederic Malle. Opening with a hefty hit of lavender and anise – it smells extremely overpowering at first and a little like soapy licorice. Nowadays, it is the vanillic and licorice nuanced lavenders which are featured in any product that aims to appeal to women or women buying for babies and children.
