About this deal

Dr Phil Trathan, Head of Conservation Biology at BAS, has been studying penguins for the last three decades. He says: As part of the international Censusing Animal Populations from Space project, BAS is using VHR satellite images to study these ice seals. We are developing new methods to automatically detect and count seals, and classify the different environments they live in, including automated counting using machine learning and Artificial Intelligence combined with thermal imaging and spectral analysis. Albatross Such estimates are valuable data that's otherwise difficult to acquire, she said. "Even though penguins are the most charismatic and maybe the most obvious wildlife to survey in Antarctica, until recently, we knew relatively little about how many penguins there were in Antarctica and how their abundance was distributed because surveying Antarctica is so difficult." As Edwards reached the second gate, the diminutive creatures began moving in an even more agitated fashion. Edwards would later describe these miniature monsters as being approximately 3-feet in height and having a grayish-green complexion much like their “ship,” although (based on his own drawing) it would seem that these beings erred on the greenish side a bit. According to Edwards, the flying mushroom soared skyward at tremendous speed before it leveled off and began heading toward St. Elizabeth, which is located northeast of Tuscumbia. The vehicle vanished within moments leaving behind a puzzled Edwards and a pasture full of befuddled bovines. Edwards later encapsulated his fantastic encounter for UFO investigator Ted Phillips: Intrigued, Edward’s followed their stares through a grove of trees and was astounded to see what he described as a massive, grayish-green, mushroom- like object — which was perched atop a circular tube — in the meadow adjacent to his barn.Fear Liath Moor • Fearsome Critters • Feathered Serpent • Fei Lian • Feishu • Feiyi • Felixstowe Fire Demon • Fern Flower • Fiji Mermaid • Fish-man of Liérganes • Fiskerton Phantom • Five-Striped Abyss Fish • Flashlight Frog • Flathead Lake Monster • Flatwoods beast • Flatwoods Monster • Flying Rays • Flæðarmús • Folly Beach Monster • Fotsiaondre • Four Mile Globster • Frank Shaw's Gargoyle • Freshwater Monkey • Fresno Nightcrawler • Fsti Capcaki • Fu Lion Dogs • Futakuchi-Onna • Fuzhu On the bone chilling morning of February 14, 1967, a 64-year old farmer by the name of Claude Edwards woke up to attend to his duties on a remote parcel of land near Tuscumbia, Missouri. As the sun rose low on the horizon, Edwards bundled up to face the bitter day, never imagining that he was about to have a face to face encounter with the unknown.

The allegedly alien life form that they ran into on that wintry day near Kangaskyla, was a small, almost lighter than air creature, which would come to be known as the Kinnula Humanoid. This being was said to be clad in a green colored protective suit similar to the creatures that Edwards bore witness to. That is assuming, of course, that the things that Edwards saw were wearing anything at all! Greenpeace has been working with scientists to study penguin colonies in the Antarctic, and they’ve made some scary findings. Penguin numbers in the colonies they studied have dropped by almost 60% – with some colonies losing as much as 77% of their population since they were last counted in the early 1970s. The scientists here are talking about a ‘fundamentally changed’ ecosystem, and say that all the evidence they have points to climate change as the main culprit. I thought I was going right up to it. I got up there and there it was. I just walked up against a wall.” Reporting this week in the journal Remote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, the authors describe how they used images from the European Commission’s Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellite mission to locate the birds. They found 11 new colonies, three of which were previously identified but never confirmed. That takes the global census to 61 colonies around the continent. The smudges on the ice show the existence of an emperor penguin colony. Image taken from the European Commission’s Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellitePenguins who had been the star attractions at Edinburgh Zoo for over a century had their beaks put out of joint when pandas arrived there a few years ago. Some of them resorted to a dirty protest aimed at the queues of panda visitors. 9. Penguins need our help It was then that Edwards (who would eventually sketch the domed vehicle) got his first good look at the soundless, glinting vessel. He would later describe the metallic surface of the vehicle as being smooth and seamless, even going so far as to compare it to “shiny silk.” He estimated that the curved top of the craft was about 18-feet in diameter and nearly 8-feet at its apex. The stem-like tube that was supporting the object was evidently made of the same material as the domed top and stood not much higher that the beings beneath it.

Emperor penguins are known to be vulnerable to loss of sea ice, their favoured breeding habitat. With current projections of climate change, this habitat is likely to decline. Most of the newly found colonies are situated at the margins of the emperors’ breeding range. Therefore, these locations are likely to be lost as the climate warms. The supraorbital gland, located just above their eye, filters salt from their bloodstream, which is then excreted through the bill—or by sneezing! But this doesn’t mean they chug seawater to quench their thirst: penguins drink meltwater from pools and streams and eat snow for their hydration fix. Players does not require any membership, allowing players to enjoy full access range of additional features such as clothing, furniture, in-game pets called "puffles", and more for penguins to enjoy the atmosphere of the game. The game is specifically designed for children aged 6 - 17, however, users of all age are allowed to play Space Penguin as long as they remain kid user friendly for child safety. Space Penguin is working on making an "Ultimate Safe Chat", where users are prevented by using swear words and revelation of information, with moderators patrolling the game to keep everyone safe. I think it's best read as a buddy project between parent and child, as I think the words might be a bit too difficult for even an 8-year-old (but, I'm hardly an expert on the subject as I didn't know any English when I was eight), although there is a glossary for some of the words and also discussion questions. The illustrations really make this book even nicer. I'm a bit older than suggested, but still had a great time reading it. I'll definitely keep this book in mind when looking for a present for a kid.
