About this deal

Citadel Contrast Paints primary use is as a single coat of paint over a light base coat or primer. The paint is made to flow into recesses and give a darker pigment in the areas shadows would naturally lay. By doing this, one coat of paint gives your miniature a measure of highlight and shadow. This range released 24 colors originally and has now come out with Speedpaint 2.0. This range has 90 colors and includes a reformulated version of the original 24 colors in it.

Vallejo is the newest entry into the Contrast alternatives with their XPress Color line. There are 24 paints available as I write this, which includes the base medium. So 23 colors + medium. More presumably to come. They come in 18ml dropper bottles. Paint Guns with Citadel Contrast Snakebite Leather or Citadel Contrast Wyldwood (Wood) and Citadel Contrast Space Wolves Grey (Metal) (I substituted Vallejo Brown Ink as I didn’t have any Snakebite leather this stage) Magic Blue is a little darker and more intense than Talassar Blue, but with a little thinning it would be very similar. Highlord Blue is a little lighter and more of a prussian blue than Ultramarines Blue, while Cloudburst Blue is very similar to Leviathan Blue. In terms of turquoise, The Army Painter only has a single colour, Plasmatic Bolt, which is similar to Aethermatic Blue, but much deeper and darker. When using one-coat paints, start with the brightest colors and work your way towards the darker ones As a saving grace, I found if you just apply a few thin highlights in a similar colour to the Speedpaint you are painting over, the reactivation isn’t much of an issue. Edge highlights with Wild Rider Red and Jokaero Orange over Blood Red Speedpaint

To use these paints there are basically two options. First, you can prime something white, or do a Zenithal highlight as a base coat. If you go with the prime option, you can either go with the Matt White or Cadre Grey though the airbrush, OR just use the normal Army Painter white primer. When applying, I noticed that Speedpaints are a bit thinner and runnier than Contrast paints, and the medium pushes the paint into the recesses more aggressively, which helps to create a smoother result even on flat areas. On the other hand, I found Contrast paints slightly easier to control because of their higher viscosity. I felt it was easier to put them on smaller details without accidentally spilling into adjacent areas. For this, I rubbed the upper half of the bases with a wet cotton swab to take away the paint from the edges, aiming for an easy highlight effect. As you can see, after 30 minutes, yet despite rubbing hard, I could barely get any paint off the edges of the details. Though a slight discolouration was visible on the cotton swabs. In some areas, I was able to scrape off the paint, but that was more due to the mechanical stress. After 2 hours of curing time, there is even less discolouration going on. Except for a few colours like Tyrion Navy. After 24 hours, reactivation is almost a non-issue, though I can still detect minor discolouration for some of the colours.Pallid Bone is a bit warmer and softer than Skeleton Horde, Hardened Leather is very similar to Gore-grunta Fur, while Sand Golem is a warm light brown. Dark Wood is like a mix of Wyldwood and Cygor Brown. Crusader Skin is a bit more reddish than Guilliman Flesh. Citadel Contrast Paints, Army Painter Speed Paints, and Vallejo XPress colors (among others) are all similar formulations and competitors. They all have the same properties of flowing into recesses. Blending: Contrast paints are also excellent for blending. They are transparent and what you’re trying to do when you blend two colors together is blur or smooth the transitions between the colors. It could be a bit more elaborate and be done in an hour. Or two, or three. Speed painting comes down to how fast you want it to go to get the result you want.

As you can see, this looks pretty awesome. This was painted with nothing other than a single coat of contrast paints for each color. It’s super easy and if you were painting something like a Beast Snagga. This is all over a white prime coat, so pretty amazing stuff! Assembly Line Painting: If you are painting multiple figures, this technique is fantastic. If you’re painting 5 orcs for example, you might start with painting all the skin green. One at a time. Then add leather boots to each. Then add steel paint to the axes. When applying, I noticed that Speedpaints are a bit thinner and runnier than Contrast, and the medium pushes the paint into the recesses more aggressively, which helps to create a smoother result even on flat areas. On the other hand, I found Contrast paints slightly easier to control because of their lower viscosity. I felt it was easier to put them on smaller details without accidentally spilling into adjacent areas.Make sure you are putting a lot of paint on the model and then pushing that paint around. You don’t really want to be brushing all that much! Diecast – Explore Our Range of Diecast Models At Scale Model Shop, we supply a wide range of diecast models, specialising in aircraft, cars, and tanks. Diecast models are a miniature replica made using a die casting or metal casting method. They are usually made of zinc or lead alloy and come fully formed in a single piece which portrays the vehicle in a smaller scale. Diecast models are much more than a simple toy, they demonstrate a higher level of quality than other plastic kits, due to the higher shelf life. This is great for any enthusiast collector as you can display for years and pass it down to the next generation. It doesn’t matter if you’re just starting out or have been collecting for years, there is no denying how appealing a diecast model collection is. Browse through our range of brands available, including Corgi, Diecast Masters, and Greenlight – there is plenty to choose from! It is a subtle difference between the primary use of contrast paints and washing. Normally, you’ll apply contrast paint over a light color primer. The contrast paints supply all the color, and give a highlight/dark finish. However, there is one thing I don’t like about Speedpaints that no one is really talking about: Even when they’re dried, they will reactivate when you paint over them. Here are some spots I wanted to touch up with Greyseer, and even though I applied multiple coats, the Blood Red Speedpaint keeps coming through, turning the Greyseer pink. I reached out to The Army Painter and they told me it is due to the composition of the medium and most prominent with Speedpaints containing a high amount of yellow pigments. Last up we’ve got the red. You’ll notice we’re getting really solid colors here that don’t behave like the Peachy Flesh. These paints are all designed for one solid color which I like personally when painting flames. You could thin them down with some water or medium if you want a more natural blend but, I didn’t do that because I realized too late.

Now, what you CAN do to increase reactivation is to use Speedpaint Medium instead of water. I soaked a cotton swab in Speedpaint Medium and rubbed it over the edges of the Plaguebearer’s sword to remove the paint and enhance the highlights. This works better than just using water. But I feel it’s still a bit more difficult and tedious to pull off than with the old formula. Maybe some other painter or YouTuber can find a better way to make the blending work.
