The Speyside distillery prides itself on the freshness of their ingredients and purity of their water. It is this combination that they claim makes their malt, in their words, “the gentle dram”. Over the last few years, the distillery has started to recognise that whisky enthusiasts are seeking more than just the gentle, straight-forward Tomintoul experience. Enter a range of sometimes inelegantly crafted ‘bolt on’s’: Tomintoul ‘with a peaty tang’, a small range of cask finishes and a handful of older, vintage expressions. I find myself asking if the impressive “21” on the label is enough to justify such a large sum? No doubt it used to be but haven’t things moved on? Haven’t tastes evolved? Nowadays there are fantastic whiskies at just three years old and there are no-age-statement releases with such intensity and complexity that age almost seems irrelevant.
