Fifty-three standard years pass, and Luther greatly increases recruitment of new Dark Angels for the crusade from Caliban during that time. Lion El'Johnson does not visit Caliban even once in that span of years. Zahariel begins to suspect that the Dark Angels on Caliban have grown more loyal to Luther than to Johnson. Early in the 31st millennium, the Galaxy is in the throes of the Great Crusade. Originating from Terra ( Earth), it is an interstellar crusade that claims the galaxy as the rightful domain of Humankind, and aims to reunite the multitude of scattered human colonies remaining from earlier space exploration under the domain of an "Imperium of Man". Organised in numerous expeditions, the Crusade fields huge fleets and vast armies; at its forefront, led by the Primarchs, are Legions of Space Marines– genetically enhanced supersoldiers numbering in the millions. Over the course of two Terran centuries, the Crusade has reached star systems more than 50,000 light years away from its original staging point in the Sol ( Solar) System, has assimilated millions of worlds into the Imperium, and has given Humankind a dominant position among the galaxy's species. Its grand mastermind is the "Emperor of Mankind", a mysterious superhuman of unknown origin. [3]

The Great Beasts of Caliban were essentially created by the Warp's constant touch upon the world. Any Humans that wandered near places of power, where the Warp's taint seeped through into realspace, were slain by the Great Beasts.

But an ancient evil gathers its strength beneath the surface of Caliban, and the I st Legion will soon be thrust into a deadly conflict where all that they know will be cast into doubt.

With news of Horus' treachery spreading across the galaxy, the Great Crusade grinds to a halt as the primarchs and their Legions decide where their loyalty lies -- with the Emperor, or with the rebel Warmaster. He asks if Zahariel remembers the name of the Warp entity from the ritual. Lying, Zahariel says he cannot remember its name. Luther appears to accept this but says that next time they will be successful in their efforts to seize the power of the Warp. Zahariel reported the taint to Luther. The current Lord Cypher, Captain Merir Astelan, and the Librarian Israfael were also present to hear the Librarian's report. The Laurel of Defiance: With the Shadow Crusade scattered and Imperium Secundus on the rise, an Ultramarines Captain reflects on his nature on and off the battlefield, and what might have been had the Heresy not happened. There has been some debate over the identity of the titular 'First Heretic'. Lorgar and Argel Tal are the novel's main protagonists and both become 'heretics' over the course of the story, but chronologically Erebus and Kor Phaeron both acted in the interests of Chaos long before the book begins. Three years after the Word Bearers' departure from Colchis the 1,301st Expedition has traveled past the edge of known Imperial space and comes across a vast area where Warp energy bleeds into reality. At a meeting of expedition commanders the main astropath of the fleet flagship De Profundis tells them that a kind of psychic scream is emanating from a planet on the edge of the storm. Lorgar, with his limited psychic gifts, is able to inform the gathered commanders that the scream is not wordless: someone is shouting his name into the Warp. [1e]Sanguinius braves the horrors of the Vengeful Spirit with a single purpose in mind: to kill his corrupted brother Horus, end the Heresy, and save Terra from Chaos. But the powers behind the Warmaster do not make this an easy task... The Lion asks Perturabo to support him for Warmaster when the Emperor chooses Horus' replacement. Perturabo agrees to do so. The Dark Angels, too, face a time of testing, both among the stars and on their homeworld of Caliban. Luther, once Lion El'Jonson's trusted second-in-command, now languishes as an exile in all but name while his master struggles to thwart the Traitors' advance upon the Forge World Diamat. Following the events of Scars ( Book 28), four years have passed and the White Scars are fully committed to fighting the Traitor Legions as they begin their march to Terra. But they have been slowly and surely hemmed in by burgeoning Warp Storms and the might of four legions deep in the galactic north. Caught betweens this opposition and the internal psychological damages his legion is suffering from attrition warfare, Jagathai Khan and his allies turn their efforts to uncovering another path to Terra, one that unearths secrets of the divided Navis Nobilite and the Emperor Himself. But the much-changed Emperor's Children under a resurrected & mutated Eidolon and the growing darkness of the Death Guard under Mortarion are hot on their heels, and to open the Path of Heaven not all will see the Heresy to the end...
