About this deal

There are still similarities in the dry down, but I prefer the fruity woodsiness of A*Men Ultimate, that almost lends this fragrance a leathery accord, and maybe some light licorice. This is a nice surprise, as I don’t get that scent from Rochas. Rochas has more of a musky perfumey vibe to it as well when it dries down. A*Men Ultimate has its own unique scent on dry down, which comes within the hour. As it dries down, hints of the original A*Men make an appearance. It becomes fruitier and brighter than Rochas, and they take different directions upon dry down. There is a hint of A*Men Pure Malt DNA in there somewhere too, leaving a slightly boozy touch. There is a beautiful woody coffee creaminess in the dry down that sets this one apart from the others. A fantastic concept. Scotch has always had a historical reputation for class, quality, and style, and it's golden-ambery appeal is legendary. Thierry Mugler Pure Malt is a great boozy fragrance, the most prominent opening notes are sweet whiskey and malt combined with sweet fruity accords, some green/earthy tones, and smoky woods. The whiskey note found in the opening combines with the malt note creating a boozy fragrance that is pleasant but it not necessarily smells like whiskey alone or malt alone, the combination of both creates a different, unique, and fantastic tone. The bergamot and orange described as opening notes, combine among other fruity notes, to the wearer, they just smell like fresh and sweet fruits. The coffee found in the mid notes, adds a soft bitter taste that adds depth to the fragrance and enhances very well the boozy notes; the patchouli adds a clear and distinguishable green note, not strong but noticeable, and, the cedar adds its aromatic woody note that is well known for. A few minutes after the initial application, Thierry Mugler Men Pure Malt reaches dry-down and with it, the musk develops joining the green patchouli; the vanilla seems to maintain the sweet tones initially created by the opening fruit notes; the amber develops a soft powdery tone which further improves the projection of the fragrance; finally, the peat adds its malt-like tone and bumps up the smoky scent of the fragrance. Once Pure Malt has reached its full dry-down, it can be summarized as a sweet boozy, fruity, and woody fragrance with some musky and smoky accords. Thierry Mugler Pure Malt feels mature, playful, bold, casual, and pleasant. Newer boozy smells are boozier, sweet gourmand fragrances are sweeter, and there is more frequently an emphasis on realistic expressions of food and drink. While I certainly enjoy those, I think they also show how balanced and ahead of it all the Mugler A*men line was, and for many, Pure Malt is the best of this line. The whole thing is warm, sweet, and gourmand. Angel Men Pure Malt is an experience all its own and probably one of the best colognes on the market. It’s application is niche, but it does things so utterly well, that I want to spray it on more and more.

The opening of A*Men Ultimate is very fresh, aquatic-like. I don't get much bergamot. The fresh fades after about ten seconds into a candy sweetness that reminds me of walking into an old five and dime store full of every candy you can imagine, and I like this but hate it at the same time. I do not detect balsam fir, and there is only a very small hint of cocoa in the dry-down. Vanilla dominates the fragrance, but it is a synthetic vanilla, not natural vanilla. I feel like they were aiming for a similar vibe to Le Male or Eros; even the bottle is blue-green like both those. Projection is minimal, sillage (scent trail) seems almost zero, odor life short, but some of the base notes hang on for a whole day but with no projection. Amber Wood reminds me immediately of Mugler A*Men Pure Malt, but just a bit more powdery and sharp via the inclusion of iris, but the amber and wood with patchouli in Amber Wood more or less recreate the base of coffee and patchouli mixed with the booze in Pure Malt. I blind-bought this. The only other Mugler I own is Mugler Cologne, which I really like. The A*Men line, to me, has been too intense. I don't own any of them. Not that I won't. I may eventually. So, when I read about A*Men Ultimate, it sounded different than the previous A*Mens and I thought I'd give it a try. I expected it to be fresher than it is. This is likely not a work scent. This is casual fragrance, and could be worn day or night, but I imagine it could be really nice as an after hours/nighttime, date fragrance, or for a day at the beach. This is a great fragrance for a night out, especially if going to a bar or a venue where alcohol is served. Quite a youthful scent, but certainly can be worn by any age, including the ladies.

It has a wonderful, wonderful opening that lasts for around 10-15 minutes on my skin. The fruity, orange, bergamot thing is not only refreshing, it has a richness to it and that Angel DNA shows up almost immediately. As it dries down, the notes in the middle appear. They are in there but they are subtle. Today’s installment of my ever-running series of cologne comparisons will be between two scents from the Angel Men line by Thierry Mugler, Pure Havane and Pure Malt. These are two popular and well respected fragrances, as A*Men flankers. In This post, I want to explore the openings of both, how each smells, how it performs, and which of these two colognes is a better buy overall?

I can confirm that these fragrances are different to each other. The original A*Men Pure Malt is a combination of the Pure Malt Whisky note and the original A*Men Eau de Toilette fragrance. The woody notes of cedar wood and patchouli and the powerful notes of coffee already present in the original A*Men Eau de Toilette intensify the combination. The fragrance is then further distilled using modern technology. This is a very likeable and appealing scent that is very different from the original and its flankers. I guess it could be targeted to the younger crowd who aren't used to powerful fragrances yet.A*Men Ultimate is a great choice for men who are looking for a versatile, stylish, and sophisticated fragrance. It is well-priced and long-lasting, and it is sure to turn heads wherever you go. Longevity is not super impressive especially in the newer MUGLER formulations. If you can, get your hands on an older, Thierry Mugler bottle pre-reformulation. That's been my experience with all A*Men- the older they are, the better... That was what i felt, however, until just a few weeks ago when I decided to give it another shot and just wore it as an A*Men fragrance with lowered expectations and was pleasantly blown away. The start features the blend of fruits, vanilla, whiskey, and a bit of the patchouli. The patchouli comes through to give it a warm bakery feeling, like it does in so many women’s perfumes. However here, it just helps to shape the alcoholic sweetness. The opening of A*Men Ultimate is dominated by the coffee note, which gives the cologne a warm, inviting aroma.
