Assessment by a qualified Occupational Therapist is recommended to ensure this Bed lever is appropriate for your needs. A wide range of finished hand rails are available from DIY chains for you to choose from. A plain 50mm mop head cross section softwood rail may be used. The Bed lever will not carry the full weight of the user, it is only used for balance and support whilst moving from sitting, lying or standing. A 600mm long horizontal rail 680mm from the floor beside, and extending in front, of the toilet pan for use when sitting down on the toilet. This rail can be horizontal or set at an angle of up to 15 degrees. Alternative suggested measurements are a minimum 500mm long rail, at a height of 600mm from the floor, with the rear fixing 400mm from the wall at the rear of the toilet.

Must be fitted onto a suitable stable and firm mattress that will not squash excessively and create a gap between the bed lever and mattress. Hold on to the bed lever as you sit yourself up, then swing your legs over the side of the bed to reach the floor. Standing up Written by the South Canterbury DHB. Suitable for all divan beds, slatted beds and profiling divan beds. Not suitable for electrically height adjustable beds It is recommended that it is run continuously from the bottom to the top of your flight of stairs, including going around the edge of any intervening landings and across window openings. The handrail should be allowed to continue past the top and bottom steps by 300mm. Person using the lever is deemed to be alert and orientated, even if getting up in the night to access the toilet. Both styles come complete with a specially designed strap kit to secure the rail's position on the bed, and can be fitted to single, double or kingsize beds.

The EasyFit Plus Bed Rail has a low, wide base plate for stability and slightly splayed legs. The base slides under most divan beds easily, whilst the sleek, sophisticated design of the EasyFit Plus Bed Rail makes it a modern addition to your bedroom, promoting freedom and independence. Consider the advice about the different kinds of grab rails. Identify the best types of rail for your particular requirements. The horizontal rail can be used in combination with a bath board. The user may benefit from holding the rail while they sit on the board, then turn and lift their legs in and out of the bathEvery time you use your bed lever, make sure it's fitted firmly between the bed base and mattress and there are no gaps between the upright part of the lever and the mattress.

Staircases usually have a handrail on one side, although this may not extend to the full length of the staircase. Most DIY stores sell handrails which can be used to extend the existing handrail all the way up the staircase if it is required. Adding a handrail to the other side of the staircase will provide more support where needed. Long lengths of rail are available and may also be installed along corridors. They are fixed to the wall or to the floor behind the toilet and can fold down to a horizontal position alongside the toilet. The EasyFit Plus Bedrail provides a stable support when getting into and out of bed, and can also be used to assist with re-positioning whilst in bed. The ergonomic handle offers multiple grip options enabling you to find the most comfortable position. Two handrail heights are available, making it suitable for use on low and tall beds. You shouldn't use a bed lever with an air mattress or with adjustable beds that let you raise and lower the head (once you raise the head of the bed the lever becomes insecure). If you use an air mattress or have an adjustable bed, talk to an occupational therapist about what you can do. A rail can be fixed horizontally to the wall 75-100mm above the bath rim (see dimension c in diagram). It should start 200mm from the tap end of the bath (dimension a) (COT 2006 p13, H M Government 2015, p58, diagram 26).

Safety at night

Fixing to UPVC plastic door frames should be avoided as the frames are unlikely to have the necessary internal materials in the required area to support a grab rail's fixings. You feel unsteady or breathless when getting in or out of bed. A bed rail can provide you with reliable support, enabling you to regain your breath or balance, before going about your daily routine. Getting in and out of bed can be challenging when you don’t have anything to grab hold of to get you up and mobile. Our Bed Lever can be an easy solution to increase your mobility and make a huge improvement to your safety and independence.
