Like most of the Harlan Coben adaptations we’ve seen on Netflix — The Stranger, The Woods, Safe— the mystery of The Innocentunfolds slowly, almost in a torturous fashion. But the mystery isn’t about who did what, it’s about who knew what and what loved ones and confidantes of the main character are hiding. The gaping improbabilities won’t bother fans of rose-tinted nightmares a bit as they gasp their way through Matt’s free-fall, scared and happy as kids on a roller-coaster. Once there, something goes wrong, with Duff ending up in a fight. Matt has nothing to do with it, but... Duff is his best friend and the other guy is beating him hard. Ergo, Matt has to do something: I know this is the work of fiction, but I expect some authenticity in the way the law enforcement officers work.
